I think all of the time spent on a upgrade is a waste of money. I ran a Fun Day in 98-104 degree day in 20 minute runs never really running under 6k rpm and bouncing 9k rpm all around the track and my oil temperature never went over 200 degrees and dropped after to 160 degrees and stayed during my cool down lap. Daily driving I stay around 180 degrees in busy traffic.
It's not something to do on a whim, it needs to be carefully thought out.

The factory coolers are very good, the only downside is in cold weather. They have crappy thermostats and allow cold oil to flow and so it takes a while for the oil to heat up (not good). A good oil thermostat is going to allow the oil to heat up quickly by sending it back to the engine and going to a simpler hose routing with larger lines increases oil pressure (proven by me). The factory lines and fittings are know to rust and leak in winter climates and replacement parts are very expensive unless you find a part out going on at the time you need a replacement. Custom lines and fittings are generally cheaper unless you go with top notch stuff.

super thread revive time!
Would you recommend Mishimoto oil coolers? I've seen them on various built stance:nation cars so I assume they can't be horrible.
also how many rows would you suggest if I'm doing dual oil coolers?

I would like to take this discussion a step further.
My reason---serious engine builders including racing beat mazmart , pettit--etc will tell you to not let the oil temperature get above 200-205 F. THIS IS MEASURED ON THE COOL SIDE__returning from the coolers.
Unless you live in a cool climate-- i will venture to say that the oil temps are above that routinely. Especially in the south. ALL the members of the Ga RX8 club see temps higher than that--on track and during city driving. Some see 200F even just driving on interstate during the summer time.
Now oil viscosity does influence oil temps. Most of us do use a 40 wgt oil--synthetics and mineral.
My point is --i think we need better oil cooling and what have others done?
before the summer ( in Ga) I plan to upgrade my oil cooling system ( currently stock with the vents cut and one cooling fan for stop and go traffic) . My system is borderline--the thermostats work fairly well as I see now ( winter months) a return temp of about 180F. But in the summer i can see 200-205 fairly often. On track I do see 220F often.
My coolant temps are well under control but the oil needs a little help?
Is this something that needs addressing or is this another olddragger ramble?

Well we will see this summer at full boost but for now I struggle to get temps well above 200F and that is with oil flowing thru the turbine housing.
Honestly man when I was measuring temps in the oil pan there was not a huge difference in temps versus measuring it at the oil filter plate.
Hoss-05 is plumbing in a cooler with a fan on the oil line that feeds his turbo. I am curious how much that will extend the life of his turbo along with his use of Evans coolant.
