Just got myself my spare motor!

20,000km 4 port motor,

Story is:

I bought it off a service manager for Mazda, he had a customer who seized the engine due to carbon buildup.

He took it apart cleaned it fully, put new coolant seals and oring seals, Rotors & Housing were as new*, apex seals were in good condition.

He originally wanted to put it into his RX7 FC but decided against it.

I managed to secure it off him for 1,200 AUD :D Couldnt be happier.

The motor is being delivered to Xtreme Rotary (Rohan), where it will get isotropical finish, rotors rebalanced, new ceramic apex seals.

Then will keep it on the side, as a spare :D.

So in the near future i am going to change the intercooler to water to air, seal the air box, construct a ram duct infront of the air filter. Then change the crank pulley to push it to 10 psi, ran some aggressive tuning. Test the parameters of the current engine, then with the data, going to plant in the new motor and tune it accordingly.

Cant Wait :D

^ that sounds like FUN!
I for one would like to see the "isotropical" finishing pics when they do that.

The subtropical finish will be on the eccentric shaft i believe.

Now xtreme rotary's rohan is pretty famous around this area

But it would be interesting what he can do to up the power for us 4 ports, however from the few engines he has rebuilt, he has stated that porting will yield almost no result for 4ports, and may ONLY be viable for 6 ports, so i'll see him next week sometime and ask him what he reckons.

So phil chip in abit here, what have you discovered that can give the 4port abit more, i noticed you have done some sorts of porting, how is that working for ya? and what sort of porting are we talking about.

Oh and on a side note, since i bought the engine from a Mazda service manager, he helped me run a quick check of vehicle history for outstanding recalls, and past warranty builds.

What he said was interesting though, at around 33,000km service there is a line about engine, so when i got home i checked the service log,

Apparently the engine was changed, how did i miss that when i bought the car?

It was a single line "drained and replaced engine" lol

anyways i had some vacuum fluctuations, and i replaced the turbosmart duo port BOV with the bosch bypass valve the kit came with and it seems to hold it better. Boost some to be smoother too with better response.

I just ordered the Pettite Billet Bypass which appears to be exactly same as the bosch bypass valve used in my kit, i just really dont trust plastic stuff!

I have no idea how you could make that work. but I'm interested!

There's not enough material you can take out to justify porting. Unless your doing the rebuild yourself and have nothing else to do while you save up money for more parts.

Hey Shady

No details just some wild ideas thrown around during a quick chat, will have a more deep talk about it this coming week.

Just ordered the BHR Midpipe with the Davesport Cat

When it arrives will do a comparison run vs back then when i had the SMB 100cel 2.75 hi flow cat and see if any power difference.

Then a quick tune to adjust to the new high flow cat, and throwing in some racing fuel just as a test on the dyno

I think there is more power to be had in the intake track of the UIM and LIM. There is a lot of sharp angles and casting marks that can be smoothed out bettering the ingested airflow.

the intake and uim will get a complete workover during december.

Including new water to air intercooler, we are currently in contact with a reputable producer of water to air in Australia and getting initial rough design worked out.

Higher boost pulleys and gonna bring 12 psi to the old motor to see how long it last and use it as a tuning basis to get it down right.

When that engine goes bye bye, we are gonna pull it apart and see what the source of destruction was, and the new engine will be built and critical areas will be reinforced (deeper side seals with deeper apex seals etc.

But anyhow in mean time work on something small and see what knightsport kit can offer.

Yes I had Easy_E1 do some porting work on my engine when it was rebuilt. It was not apparent if the performance improved. I don't think he went too far with it.

Thanks for that Phil

I'd presume some sort of exhaust side porting?

or just a clean up of the original ports

well i am in the process of ordering a AEM CAI, which i will mod to fit my kit, and we are in the stages of contacting plasma man here in australia to fab up a compact sized water to air.

With the bhr hi flow cat system coming 2.75 -> 3inch mid section we will get all these installed together and retune, do a pull in pump premium fuel and a pull in race fuel and see what results we get.

Once we get that intake temp under control, we will up to boost to 10-14 psi and abuse the motor in all the naughty bits.

Once that blows, we will prob pull it apart, see the locations of failure and build the new engine to address this issue.

What is on the table at the moment is definitely deeper side seals with taller apex seals, a side by side comparison from rohan showed me that the rx8 apex seal looks like a matchstick next to the older 13b apex seals
