2nd oil cooler for AT rx8 ?
Still say put an extra water radiator in there rather than an extra oil cooler .
Oil temps are relative to coolant temps. If the coolant is running cool, your oil is running cool. Start with the coolant system. Make the engine cooling system more effective and your oil temps will follow.
Mazdamaniac and I tried this last year with a high volume fan behind the oil coolers. It DID NOT do anything noticeable to the oil temps. I would not install a oil cooler fan because we tried it and it did nothing.
I can see on the track that an extra oil cooler would help keep your oil temps lower. But in traffic and slow speeds the oil fan would be a better choice. And if you wanted more oil in your oiling system you could buy a greddy oil pan. I know we can go back and fourth on which is better extra oil cooler or oil fan. Hell i think Mazda should have put 2 oil coolers on the A/T's from the start. They know Rotaries produce a lot of heat.
i think the mods the AT owner should get:
- Mazmart 2nd oil cooler
- Mazmart water pump
- Mazmart thermostat
- BHR A/T radiator because it has a built in transmission cooler as well
but i just have to wait for it.. i hate US dollars

Down to what temp? One thing I am curious about is what the typical RX-8 owner has going for oil temps and if they are actually "too high" according to modern oil standards.
Lets re-evaluate your statement, adding another Oil cooler is not going to add that much more oil in the system. If you were looking to add more oil into the system my choice would be to add a larger capacity Oil Pan.
Also those that have done the DIY for enlarging the shrouds have reported a 10 deg drop.
We are not merely concerned about modern oil standards only, as like your compadre has stated that with Temperature drops in coolant, oil temperatures will follow. Same can be said about drops in Oil temperatures which in turn will drive down water temperatures as well.

i have all these except for the thermostat.
Bastard
Just to throw something out there. I wouldn't mind a greddy oil pan, other then that though, l can't see the need for any improvement in this area if l don't track my car or have FI. Am l wrong?
I can see the climate coming into this question, but l don't live in a particularly hot area (max 32'C / 90'F).

Good to know guys.
Then someone had some fun with mine, except no one owned it before. Mine's an AT, with two oil coolers.
A quick search on this forum has led me to believe I'm not the only one:

So unless Mazda decided to add something that looks exactly like a second oil cooler (i haven't checked the lines) just for looks... then I have two.

I heard of one fellow that the dealer installed a second one on.
You might be a lucky guy. Mazda assembly line worker might have screwed up in your favor.
I've looked at all the years parts lists and none of them have a second oil cooler for the AT model.
I've even asked the parts guy's at the dealers to show me on their computers and they all show only one. 2004-2009 for the AT.

but back to the question of operating temperature range - I always had assumed 180-200 was the optimal temperature? I saw it somewhere in a thread regarding track temperatures (yes, track is different from street, but if you aren't going pass 200, that's fine also right?)

I've no idea, really. People attributed it to the 6-port engine having 2 oil coolers. Others say 06+ had it. Others say 04-08 have no mechanical changes besides going from 4 port to 6 port.
Easy, what is in place of the passenger oil cooler in a stock AT that didn't have it?
