Question for FI guys regarding the stock transmission

A friend of mine has an 08 RX-8 and he's been considering going either going turbocharged or supercharged because being in California you get a grace period before you are actively smog tested, so we figure now is the time to get a number of years of fun in unimpeded.

But anyway my question was regarding the stock MT in the 8. For those that are running either a turbo or supercharger kit on their 8, are you using the stock transmission or some other tranny swap (FD, FC TII, T56?)?

If you are on the stock tranny, how long have you had the kit and how many miles approx have you put on with it?

From my searching on this board I basically found that the stock tranny isn't beefy enough for race duty but otherwise should be ok for a mostly daily-driven, occasional spirited driving 8 even if boosted?

the stock transmission is being used by quite a few FI guys and it seems to be holding up well.
With that said, if you're pushing over 330+ hp, that transmission wont' last too long.
FD transmission seems to be a good route if you're breaking transmissions

330rwhp yes?

I don't think my friend plans on shooting that high. We're thinking probably 250-300rwhp tops. He doesn't really want to pay as much as it'd cost to get to around 350 along with the transmission concerns, and it'd be more power than he'd know what to do with.

Thanks for the input, hope more people chime in on their experiences thus far.

mysql put a lot of miles on his turbo'd 8, he might have some insight.

Also, Mazdamaniac is currently well above the 300 hp mark and is still on the stock transmission. (though he does have an FD transmission in the garage for when the inevitable happens)

stock should be fine upto 300 HP, unless your friend plans on doing a lot of drag racing or other clutch / drive train abuse activities.

The syncros is what usually goes in the transmission. I just take it easy shifting and make sure the clutch pedal is pressed down all the way. If you're going for 300-rwhp or under, you'll be fine.

To swap in any other transmission you're looking at a custom PPF, which won't be cheap

The boneyard tranny I swapped in has been holding up nicely and I have really laid into it a few times. The key is to remember that it isn't a "dog-box". Besides, the 5-speeds aren't all THAT much stronger than what we have now. The 20B guys snapped their input shafts on their 6-speeds at 400 h.p.
I think TeamRX8 might argue with you here

He'll likely be the first to say he's not to nice to his transmissions
