Yes it sucks big time!

I pulled off to an access road to do a data log. I down shifted to 3rd and was around 3k or 4k and started to accelerate and then heard 3 quick pop sounds. My window was down so not 100% on what it sounded like. The battery light, ABS and DSC all came on. Steering became very difficult too. I talked with a few folks today and did some searches and that seems to be common symptoms when the alternator goes.

I just hope nothing happens to the motor. Motor idles fine. Only error code on the AP is low voltage. No CEL. But I was getting on it and building boost when it happened.

I wish

I am concerned fuel was cut due to the alt going out and I went lean. I hope the 3 quick pop sounds was nothing serious. After I swap the alt and fix the harness then I will need to do a compression check.

have you thought about trying to repair the damage on the harness? That will give you a idea whether the alternator failed and possibly get you on the road quickly..you can probably find a harness on ebay

I am going to check out the harness in a bit when I'm done working. Just trying to line everything up just in case I need pull the trigger. I want to get this back together and tested to see if the motor is hosed.

oh, son of a #@$@!!!
damn pdxhak, I hope the problem is isolated to the harness and that nothing else went with it. (motor)

can it be repaired as Greg suggested just to test the motor out?

I will be looking for all that. But the symptoms seem to be exactly what other have experienced when the alternator crapped out.

How do I confirm the harness is still good?

I think dondo threw a jinx on my car because it was running good. He really wants to win the bet and collect on some beers from me

I would trace the harness as far back as it is burnt and rewire it if possible.

wow, so sorry for not chiming in earlier.

(my phone fails me yet again)

anyways - pd: i wouldn't sweat it too much. That looks EXACTLY like what happened to my car. The top part melted completely off on my car n' shorted all the electronics in my car.

Good news: my dealership replaced it within 24 hours for free.

Bad news: you're gonna have to tear your car back down to stock.

I have the report from everything they replaced n' what they did at home. I'll get back on tonight n' post it

Btw, this didn't affect the engine at all. They said they didn't replace my alternator - just some 'connectors' (no tech available to explain to me in detail when i picked up my car - just some cashier)

Thanks Atilla. Please send me the list or post it here if you have it. At this point it would be very difficult for me to go back to stock to have this covered. Out of curiosity is this covered if the car is not under full warranty?

The alternator is swapped. The harness looked ok from what I could tell. I cleaned up the connection and wrapped the harness with electrical tape. The battery is dead so I'm waiting for the wife to get home so I can jump the car. If everything looks ok then I will take it for a spin around the block and check for codes.
