My thoughts on the GReddy turbo installation
One great tip that I didn't discover until my 3rd time installing a Greddy kit, install the oil feed line onto the turbo before you even try to put the turbo anywhere near the car. Then just fish the line up and over.
when I upgrade the turbo though, I will have my buddy's shop do it, I've had enough of looking underneath my car for a lifetime
ahhhhh - mine has a hex bolt on it . An allen head makes sooooo much more sense .
Didn't think you could put it on before you bolt the turbo to the manifold as that nut beside it becomes impossible to do up ?

^mine was the same as yours with the hex bolt....I just used a ratchet-wrench. I couldn't get the turbo in with the return line bolted on. Very tight spot. Takes a few attempts to figure out a way to do it. I can't remember exactly how I did it, but all I know is I had to twist my arm and hand in an almost unnatural way.

A lot of you guys say removing the engine mount makes installing the turbo a lot easier, but how important is it to put the engine mount back exactly where it was before? Can this be done without an engine hoist? Can it be only one engine mount or does it have to be two taken off?
BHR put my turbo on. I did the piping and messed with that stupid oil line. I still have a very small oil leak from the return line. One drop every few days. Congrats on the turbo. Mine has been strong since.

I used a jack and a 2x4 to hold the engine. You must take the whole motor mount off on the passenger side and the bracket so you can get the stock manifold out. It gives you a lot more room. It's not stupid hard to do, the hardest part is trying to break the bolts loose.
I also found some loose nuts that connect the downipe to the turbo and the manifold to the turbo.....wth.....guess I didn't tighten them enough the first time. Hopefully I took care of that.
I think my leak is from the actual return line rubber hose that connects to the oil pan. I think is loose up top near the metal line that connects to the turbo. I hope if I just tighten the t-bolt clamp on the rubber line it will stop leaking. In ref to the oil line that connects to the middle of the turbo from the sensor: I can get to it with the inlet pipe off and use a small 10mm wrench. The open end fits perfect and you can angle the wrench up and it will tighten. I suspect that since the oil return line is not under pressure it wont be an issue.
FYI - to be clear; esp for the GT3071R; I recommend taking both motor mounts off; then you can move the engine alot farther out of the way; just be careful of the oil sending unit on the drivers side. Take it off.
Then you can get that engine all the way to the drivers side and nice and low; I was able to assemble it in this position - Like bolt manifold on; then bring the turbo in and bolt it up..... now THAT is a lot of room.

On another note , i'm putting mine in today . I just noticed how the inlet pipe that goes down to the turbo passes directly in front if the hot air off the rad fans making it in effect an interheater . That pipe should be ceramic coated or something .....
go back a few posts and you have your answer - it's called a capscrew ....

I meant the oil return line that has the 2 10MM bolts that goes from the oil pan to the bottom of the turbo. One of the bolts is easily accessible...you can see it clearly when looking underneath the car. The other bolt that is what I am having a hard time with. Like I said, I could only get a wrench on it but couldn't move it too much due to the manifold being in the way.
Know which one I am talking about now?
yes - i did to start with . You need to put a allen head capscrew in there and then get a ball ended allen key like Kane said . Makes doing it up a breeze .

btw....what is the size of that capscrew?
so all in all... the greddy kit is doing good. ive heard good and bad. is that due to harsh owners installing the kit. or greddy has there hit and miss kits...which version of the greddy kit did you get? please send me a link?? im sure its the same one ive been looking at.
im jelouse. i did an install on my last car. it was my daily driver. that was a bad idea when i drive 80 miles a day... i plan on doing the rx8 after i pick up another car to drive daily to work.

The greddy kit is a good starting point. I think it is put together well. Just the turbo isn't the greatest as it's cooled by oil only and it has journal bearings that wear out quick. You won't get incredible HP numbers, but that doesn't mean that my car isn't fun or fast. It is a blast to drive. I am still waiting on my new calibrations from MazdaManiac tho, so I do not boost much. It isn't my daily driver either.
As far as the version, I don't know what version...I bought it used from a forum member. I didn't know there really was another version, except with the "upgraded" e-manage ultimate, which I do not use.
I am happy with the performance of the kit as is, but will upgrade it to the GT3071R once my GReddy craps out.

yeah i thought there was only one version, . upgraded kit. well sounds good. maybe ill order and have it sit here. i dont plan on getting high numbers i want a little somthing again. i miss boost. had it on my last car and loved it sold it miss it

yeah I use the AP. I took some datalogs and put it into a graph. He fine tunes the calibration based on the graph. Hopefully I will hear back from him before the snow starts falling
