Started the car tonight....sort of. I just hooked up the maf pipes over where the hood would go and tossed together some rough vacuum lines. It wouldnt hold idle, just run for 5-10 seconds and slowly fade off. I"ll have to get those vacuum lines done properly and the MAF routed where I want it.

Test served its purpose though, have a small oil leak at the turbo oil fitting flange(s). The top one has a bit of oil coming out around one of the bolts. And I"m not sure if the bottom is leaking or its the oil running down from the top leak. I'll have to pull those and put a light film of rtv on the gaskets to see if that helps.
No coolant leaks fortunately.

 

Got it all together. Car will not hold idle though. I've tried swapping the two vacuum lines(OMP and Jet) to make sure I dont have them backwards. It made no difference. Car will start right up hold idle for 5-10 seconds then just drop. Giving it throttle just kills it. I've tried it on stock tune and my turbo tune. Oddly my AP is showing flat 14.7 AFR regardless of whther the car is running or not.

Found the problem, Apparently that little thing attached to the bottom of the air pump needs to be plugged in :P I remember thinking when I pulled it that I may have to put that back on the car

Congratulations though! One problem is not so hard to fix - 1000 is close to impossible; so having one problem appear at a time is nice.

 

That is the fuel pump resistor.

Just FYI, I deleted the airpump, removed the bracket, I bought a new resistor ($100) and mounted it on an aluminum bracket up out of the way of all the heat.

What is great fun is watching folks reach into the car and put the back of their arm on that resistor. Oh, the lulz.

 

Just got back from the auto parts store. Bought some gasket material to make my own gasket for that oil feed flange later today. Hopefully that will be an easy fix and I can try to get in some tuning and tweaking tonight.

This weekend I"ll have to get my exhaust welded up...its a tad loud with a straight dumped downpipe.

Damn oil feed flange was cracked and broke off when I tried to take it apart. Lucky I was able to get the broken end out of my oil feed line. Now I gotta wait for a new flange. Ahh well..at least its an easy fix.

 

I wouldn't trust that ebay cast piece. If anything get the Billet one. Much stronger. But it will cost you way more than that cast copy.

Had the car out and about a bit today.

Thing fires right up and idles fine. Took it up and down the road a few times and probably spent 30+ minutes idling in my driveway. I'll have to get my Closed loop settings fixed, car wants to bog if I try to drive it before it warms up. But once its warm it drives perfectly! No bucking, no stalling and the slightest press on the go pedal and it tries to roll right into boost. I havent had it above 2psi (1st & 2nd gear) yet though. Really just running it up to operating temperature and keep going over it with my mechanics mirror looking things over before I finish getting it buttoned up.

No leaks, no drips and everything seems to be working fine. Only engine code is from not having my rear O2 hooked up anymore.
The header wrap doesnt smoke anymore :D

I need to get my bumper put back on it so I can drive it a litte faster without the lower guard getting pushed down into the ground by the air.

Cool. Why does it sound funky?


I will mention that my first beloved car ('79 280ZX) died a horrible drowning death in a puddle in Port Richey following a brief rain (most folks dont understand FL rain and what quantity that means.) The puddle could not have been more than 6-7 inches deep. I wonder about that intake location.

 

The funky sound is because I have it running with just a 3" downpie and straight dump. My cell phone always distorts loud sounds. Its VERY loud! I'll get teh exhaust welded up for it sometime in the next week.

Thats the only reason the bumper isnt on yet. I need to make a splash guard for the filter. Once i test fit the bumper my intent is to have it higher up behind the drivers side fog light.

Tried to make my own splash guard for the filter and quickly gave up. I"m going to have to order one or find a smaller diameter filter that I can put up in the top of the bumper. For now I put the bumper on so I can play with it on dry days at least.

So I took it out for a couple of short drives last night.... I've had it up to a bit over 4PSI in second gear with partial throttle, maybe 5500 RPM. The car pulls HARD even at 75% throttle and low revs. The reason I havent fully gotten on it or started tuning yet is that my wideband is fluctuating a bit more than I want. I think its because I have the sensor towards the end of my downpipe and with just a short downturn I'm getting some air up that 3" pipe. Gonna get some exhaust on it to solve that.
Speaking of exhaust......Already tired of people saying my car sounds like a "Weedwacker from hell". Also I drove it to pick up some pizza last night and frightened some people when I strarted it. So this morning I started work on my exhaust

Here is the "Midpipe" tacked together. My midpipe goes from the downpipe all the way to the differential. I still have to weld up my splitter and tips to go out the back. Thats a Borla XR-1 Race muffler and all the pipe is 3" stainless.

Once you start running it at around 10 psi you will look back at that statement and laugh

FWIW, I took my crash bar (actual 5mph bumper) and cut off the bar between the towers, then mounted a smaller c-channel between them. I figure that the towers have the actual crumple zones in them (look at the ridges) and the bar isnt going to do much more than a steel c-section anyway.

Anyway, This gives me the room I needed to mount the HUGE filter that comes with the mazdaspeed intake ABOVE the bumper, more room for my intercooler (when I get one; working on that), decent rigidity, lost some weight, and can still mount my blinder and K40 behind my bumper cover.

 

heh, I seriously considered that while I had it apart. Especially when i was battling my intercooler pipe routing. I'll do my best to avoid doing anything that may even remotely effect the structural integrity though.

 

I debated the structural integrity with several folks before jumping in with both feet. The point that got me over the edge was a comment from Jeff (MM) reminding me that other markets do not have such beefy bumpers. IIRC the JDM version has NOTHING there.

In anycase, the smaller bar that I added has plenty of torsonal and compressional rigidity.
