I'm new to this--help with turboing?

I've had my RX8 for 3 years now, and haven't done a thing to it. I'm bored now and I think I'm ready to turbo it.

I've been doing my research on it, but I'm looking for any suggestions on kits, so far I've only seen the kit from Greddy, is there anything else out there that's good or comparable?

if you've searched and 'only sen the kit from Greddy' then you haven't searched very well.
or even bothered to search this site.

Keep looking you must.

While you will probably be flamed for not researching since this topic has been discussed here to no end I'll start you in the right direction with the questions you should be asking yourself before starting down this road:
1. What is your budget
2. What are your goals for the car, a little extra power? Huge numbers? Track, auto cross, street only?
3. Do you want a top mount or low mount kit. Do you have strict visual emissions inspections? Then a top mount may cause trouble for you.
4. What supporting mods do you have if any? BHR ignition is highly recommended at least and a Cobb AccessPORT available from MM (and ideally tuned by him as well) are good starting points. I upgraded my entire cooling system before hand just to be sure.

You will find the Turblown kits are going to be the best (but most expensive), modified GReddy kits can be bought pretty cheap if you hang around the for sale section long enough but will need to have fixes applied as well as potentially upgrading the turbo depending on your goals. I can't speak for Esmeril kits but that is another option that some people on this forum have and I believe they just put out a new version.

Turbocharging this car is no easy task, even after you have all the parts and get it installed you will most likely have to work through many technical gremlins until you are finally at a good state. I would start reading up on many people's build threads and what mods they are doing as well as other popular threads in this section.

Welcome to rx8club btw.

Thank you for the help, I'm still trying to get into all of this, I wish it came overnight so I didn't have to act so dumb about it...I guess I'm looking for somewhere to start.

I'm not trying to go cheap with it, however I don't have endless funds to drop into it. I'm looking to gain a little extra horsepower.

research research research.
That's the best advice, especially going FI.
Or, answer the questions that were offered to you so that your questions can be answered

I am still fairly new here also, but as far as every other car iv owned (and i know this is like no other car) there are quite a few supporting mods that you could start with depending on what you already have. Such as exhaust, intake, ignition, ect. Thats what i plan to do until i can get a good deal on a turbo kit,(Looking).

Do you have around 5500\6000$ to invest in the build?
If not don't even bother searching any further.

10k on the safe side. including supporting mods and possibly a engine rebuild, depending on what is needed to be replaced.

you can get into FI for a whole lot less then 10k depending on how you do it

Buying a used kit would cost you way less then half that and include most if not all the gauges you will need.

10k isnt a bad budget for safety. There are lots and lots of threads of guys who went FI, didn't take there time, and popped their engine. They had spent all their money and ended up having to part out their turbo's just to finance a new motor NA.

Just take away this one point, if the 8 is your daily driver put enough money in your budget to get it running again if something goes wrong.

Oops, forgot to mention that was my particular budget build. Everyone is right though, best to do is source a turbo kit from the classified on this forum. You can find used Greddy kits relatively cheap on there.

As long as your patient and can wait a year to source all the parts you need its doable in a 4k ish budget.

As far as engine rebuilds go you should always have a line of credit available if you have a rotary engine. LOL.

my kit cost me about 3700 after taxes. i ordered it from phantasmusa.com, its a shop in raliegh, NC that is pretty good to deal with! however i did rebuild my engine and added more parts to make sure it working correctly. currently i'm up to almost 10K with high end products for my kit. take some time and read other peoples build, but it is not cheap.

If you want a good build thread about going from basically stock to turbo'd check mine out (link in my signature). Is my car anywhere near done.... hellz no... but it is running reliably with a great tune from MM for a total cost of around $6500 (CAD) including all brand new GReddy turbo kit, accessport, gauges all supporting mods found in my build thread, tools, and minor labour; such as getting my aluminum BOV Flange welded and polished to the GReddy charge pipe. It also has alot of the problems/questions/doubts I ran into when doing the install and a very brief description of my step by step install process.
