TX HKS Turbo help

Somebody offered to sale me an "hks turbo" for around $1000. When I search the internet I can't find any information on a turbo for this company. Also, it's not a kit so it doesn't come with any other parts. So my question is what all will I need in addition to the turbo? And is it cheaper or worth it to buy all the parts separately vs buying a kit? My rx-8 is an 04 standard

hks never offered their turbo kit for the rx8 in the US...

You've never heard of an HKS turbo? Really?

If you have to ask these questions then no, you can't build your own kit

you need a lot more parts than just a turbo. piecing your own kit is not easy considering all the fabrication parts needed.

you don't know HKS? really...?

Yes, I realize there's a lot involved. That's why I was curious if the price was worth me trying to build a kit myself.
And what would be better for an rx-8; turbo or supercharger? I've searched around but can't find any definite answers.

A) There are no definite answers.

B) If you had done any searching whatsoever you would have found that answer already. Stop being lazy and do some research. If you can't or won't put the time and energy in to research something that basic you have absolutely no business even thinking about going FI with this car.

I understand the differences between a supercharger and a turbocharger. I just don't know what would be better for our cars.

There is no right answer to that. There are a lot of opinions and lots of threads written about that subject. Superchargers have a particular set of options and characteristics associated with them, and turbos another. In general the cost to properly set up either one will be similar, and everyone is going to have an opinion on what the right choice is. My personal opinion is that either FI option is viable. Some form of OEM reflash is hands down the best tuning option available for the car right now, which limits the choice of available kits. Most of the available turbo kits do not support an OEM reflash requiring more work to piece together a setup that will. The two main supercharger kits (Pettit and Hymee) both use OEM reflashes as I recall. Unless you have a limitless source of money, you need to do a lot of research before you even consider going FI with this car.

1) you've never heard of a pretty large outfit's turbo offerings.
2) you do not appear to have any idea what the cost of such a project would be

Conclusion = You can not successfully design and piece together a kit, much less install/troubleshoot/tune. (unless you have 10's of $K's laying around to destroy motors and parts in the learning proces)

I really do realize that it will be expensive, and I've got someone who is going to help me with it...I just don't know how much help he'll be for sure. I thought I would get yalls opinion first. I know that the kits range anywhere from $4500 to $9000; I was just curious how the kits compare in price and performance. I do want to and am willing to learn as much as I can, but it is hard to find information online. Especially for our cars. Just thought I would try to get some help here.

Don't take our responses the wrong way Pwned... the reaction is due to the fact that there is TONS of information about this topic that has been layed out pretty carefully by RX-8 enthusiasts for years here. Read the stickies in the Major Horsepower Upgrades section, and check out some of the Overboosted Overlords build threads.

The issue isn't just money either. The RX-8 is the only high-compression naturally aspirated rotary available. It has very unique requirements to get serious power increases and few shops or owners know all the quirks. If you want to delve into forced induction it takes a lot of research to do it correctly.

There is a lot more to going FI than just picking a kit. You have to know which tuning options are available, who is going to do the tuning, who is going to install the parts, what you are going to do if the worst does happen and you blow a motor etc. Other things worth thinking about:

The stock ignition works to just under 300whp, but is probably best upgraded before going FI. Do you plan to run catless, high-flow cat, stock cat? Which intake do you intend to use as part of the kit? Different intakes will interfere with certain tuning options. What gauges do you intend to install, where are you going to mount them, who is going to install them? Do you intend to add methanol injection? What octane fuel is available where you live? Do you intend to drive the car under track conditions or mostly street? Do you have a backup car for when your car is being worked on, or in the shop for repairs?

As far as cost, for a kit with everything needed to be reliable I would plan on spending around $10,000. You could spend less, but it never ends up as cheap as you expect. The more work you can do yourself the cheaper it gets, so if you are comfortable and capable of doing most/all of the work yourself you can save a lot of money. Remember to include the cost of whatever ECU option and professional tuning.

It's a very long process, but it can be very rewarding. Best of luck to you.
