not sure if this questions been asked, but is there any reason why the greddy turbo kit is made for 04+ models only and not the 03?

There is no such thing as the 2003.
The 2003 is actually the 2004 model.
In some markets, they don't use the American dating convention for the car model year, so there is some confusion about vehicles sold in 2003.

Do you think an STS turbo kit would have alot fewer of the problems the greddy turbo kit has.... reliability wise. Other than the obvious decreased running temperatures with the STS systems what other benefits/faults could you see by running a remote turbo like Squires?

The only problem with the GReddy kit is an undersized snail- which is fine if you run the boost pressure the kit was designed for.

Be "problems" usually come from lack of tuning, which would be a problem with any kit. And STS doesn't have a kit for our car yet- although a guy on the boards here made his own remote setup

Ya I know there isnt a kit for the Rx8 but at the shop that I go to here a guy bought an STS turbo and the accessories such as the intercooler, STS oil fill cap, etc; and had custom plumbing built by the shop owner for it. Although he was still waiting on his Access Port from MM to load up the maps so I havent seen it run yet... should be interesting though.

Air intake filter

If anyone wants to know, I didn't know what size airinx filter to buy to replace the one I had, and so I bought the Airinx Filter in the medium size. When the Filter Came in, It looked too large, but I stuffed the filter in the housing and it was the correct size. Medium is what you need.

Airinx Type S - Small - 137mm base diameter
Airinx Type M - Large - 169mm base diameter

Kane can answer your question on porting the housings - but if you have the engine apart you would be crazy not to fit stronger apex seals and fit some extra dowells

What will need to be done to modify the Mazdaspeed intake for it to work comfortably with the turbo? Is there anything outside of what i'm expecting that I should know ahead of time?

I was figuring i'd just take the intake pipe to the turbo as far into the engine bay as I could and then either get some bends or use what I already have to connect part of the MS intake to the turbo, keeping enough straight run for the MAF sensor.

Pretty much - start with the MAF housing and run that from the greddy intake pipe by the alternator, then run the tubes out the bumper and go from there - I put mine above the crash bumper for water, but the factory set up puts it behind the intercooler and you may have to adjust it a little bit.

Alright sounds solid to me, I havn't seen that part documented much in the turbo build threads so when I do mine i'll be sure to detail it a little more for others.

anyone else having a very difficult time tightening the bolts back on the turbo for the actuator and oil feed line? Any tips or recommended tools for easier access? If it weren't for this small issue, I'd be done a few days ago...

Ohh I tried that! I don't know how you managed to get the wastegate down to the headers after doing that though - it was extremely tight and wouldn't budge when I tried. The turbo basically had to be mounted for the wastegate to be fitted...(then again, I think my wastegate was upgraded to a 7 psi outlet??) As a result, I had to have the wastegate installed while mounted, then lift the turbo upwards while trying to secure the bolts for the oil return line... still proving to be difficult like a mother****** . I'm going to try Brettus' suggestion which is to remove the other engine mount to gain more access. Pray for me.

no need for removing the driver side engine mount, place the turbo with the wastegate in first..push it as far foward as possible, then install the exhaust manifold..super easy and plenty of space

Well I did what you suggested and it worked!! thanks for the advice! Only one issue remains however - getting the 4 nuts tightened from the header to turbo. How did you manage that with the oil return pipe in the way?
