Greddy Owners: Can u hear the wastegate flap???

I think i can hear the wastegate flap, it does like a metallic sound flap flap flap. At the beggining I though there was something wrong with my engine, or maybe detonation, but then my friend Maxime (who knows lots about these things) told me that was probably the wastegate. Can u guys actually hear it sometimes?

Yes its the wastegate... This is how the turbo releases the pressure.
Everything is normal

If you want to replace the farting sound of the wastegate with the PSSSSSSSSssssssssssss sound... get a Blow-Off Valve. Oh also, the BOV will be good for your turbo.

Sounds like detonation to me. Good luck on the dyno.

Yep it was pinging... Anyways, we tried too hard, we went up to 9.5 PSI.. If we run up to 8 psi, the car is good no pinging. Our original run was 188 WHP @ 5.8 psi and 180 FT/LBS or TQ. We ended up at 245.9 at 8.2 PSI and 217 TQ. Huge improvement over the curve.
I will let you know the full story tomorrow and post dyno too. I am tired by now. Thanks

being on a mustang dyno which I hear gives low numbers you may very well be the strongest 8 on here! Congrats, can't wait to hear the details!

A wastegate and BOV do two different things. The WG allows the exhaust gas to by-pass the turbine of the turbo. The bov releases the pressure when the throttle plate shuts and the compressor still is spinning. Under load you shoud hear the wg controlling the boost and when you let off the gas then the bov does its job and yes it will save the turbo.

Hey Sub Zero how is the sound of the wg? is it like a metallic rattle?

I dont know if what I hear sometimes is detonation, or the wastegate.

mine is not a metallic rattle. it litterally sounds like my car is farting.
Adrian might be right. Your sound could be pinging.

Just curious, but since your putting up some strong numbers... what else do you have? Are you using a high flow cat? If so... which one? Also, what is your A/F Ratio after tuning?

It only does it when i go 9 psi. I heard it and came back to 8 psi where it produced 245 WHP and it was fine. I am runnning 7 psi every day, just turn to 8 when i see a Honda LOL.

around high 11's AFR

thanks for the info...

I am also looking at clutch/flywheel as I now feel i will probably wear out the OEM clutch very fast. I think i really want a clutch just as an excuse to get a flywheel

Lschiavo, I own a 93 RX-7 with a single turbo and run up to 26 PSI. The wg is external and is very loud when it opens. My wife had a MS Protege and I used a manual boost controler to up the boost couple of psi. I had a very hard time hearing the internal wg dumping on the Protege so I would think that it also might be hard to hear from the Greddy kit. If it is pinging you are very lucky that you have not blown an apex seal. If you get any detonation or "pinging" happening in my 3rd gen you could kiss that motor good bye. I guess that this new motor in WAY more detonation proof but be careful and get a wide band. Look for AFR`s in the low 11`s to be safe. I run my RX-7 on a mix of VP racing fuel and AFR`s around 10.5 and am making over 500 RWHP.

I am in the process of getting the Greddy kit for my wifes RX-8 so this will be all new again to me but with the same principles. I am not sure about what plugs you are using but one step colder will help and maybe an ignition box like MSD.

Steve

the internal wastegates are considerably quieter than an external one, external ones are easily audible, you should see if you can take an audio clip so the more knowledgable guys here can tell you whats going on.

i'd bet money it's detonation. I had my boost controller up to 7psi today and it was ok.
I tried 7.5-8 psi and it was knocking. not a lot, just at the begining of smashing the throttle and then at high rpms.

Luis, if I were you. I wouldn't go above 7.5 anymore until you can get it tuned correctly.

I'm going to wait after I get the thermal recall done (R flash, i'm currently at M) before I go back and tune for 8psi.
Just in case the new flash has AFR changes. (the R will also have the M and P..... flashes).
