dumb newbie askin for help for my just-turboed car...

Hi, my first post and it just had to be about problems with my car! I was wondering if I could get some more help from the community here... I've already had tons of help with decision making while just reading the boards and never posting for the last few months.

I bought my 04 6mt about six months ago and just recently found a used Greddy turbo kit. I decided this was the best route to go for me and I got the shop to install it with a bunch of other upgrades, and ordered the WICKED MM upgrade which is on the way.

I asked the shop to install it with MM's fix #2 and it looks right. My CEL was on before the installation and it's still on now (shop didn't have the thing to diagnose it this week). After dropping my car off, they told me that

1. the plugs were bad and the car flooded although I never had that problem before. Maybe it was just a coincidence that the plugs went bad the day I dropped off the car. I told them to change the plugs to the NGK's.

I got my car back now after installation and my remote needed several button pushes to work and after a day,

2. the remote now doesn't work at all, so it might be a coincidence of the battery dying but i'm worried they messed up some electrical connection somewhere.

Anyways, after driving the car for a few days, I've noticed

3. some occasional surging at low to mid rpm

4. stalling at idle or clutch-in very frequently, for example, at every third stoplight

5. quite a bit of backfiring and popping when letting off the throttle

6. the smell of fuel

So they installed the stock greddy turbo kit with fix#2, full exoticspeed exhaust, boost guage, oil pressure guage (incomplete), ext guage and some unrelated things like exoticspeed coilovers etc. I am getting the boost controller, wideband o2 sensor, bov installed next week when everything is ready.

I downloaded the unlocked map but he wouldn't use it so he used the password locked one with the emu. I downloaded the software /manuals etc. and spent a lot of time searching and reading the archives here on all the turbos, problems and solutions and found a lot of helpful info, but am still wondering about my problems and whether or not the bov will solve this problem. I also tried connecting to the emu and it seems to behave unpredictably. I wanted to replace the locked map with the unlocked one so that the 'tuner' would tune it next week but when i connected, it kept going online then offline, then online then offline, then online, etc. and i was scared to clear the map because i didn't know what I was doing... so.. i don't have my a/f installed yet and don't have any data logs etc. because I can't even get my comp to connect consistently - windows vista? worked for someone else though.

I was just hoping to get some feedback for this fun hobby... but i'm just a beginner trying to learn as much as i can. ordered some books and hopefully they'll be here soon. I'd love for my car to run perfectly, since it's my daily driver, like many of your cars because the faster we go, the younger we get relative to the slowpokes... lol thanks!!!

Your driving problems are probably due to the fact you haven't had your car tuned properly. I'm not sure about all the other stuff. Also, it might be helpful to mention if you are using the Ultimate E-Mangle, or just the blue.

I had almost all the same problems that you had when I installed my turbo!
After almost giving up (5 months of hell) and going back to stock I decided to buy the INT-X EMS…
And like Magic all my problems were gone!!!
I know some people here think the Ultimate is good if tuned properly however I gave the EMU every possible chance for 5 months to work fine and it did not!
You will have a lot less headaches with the INTx
And by the way you should not be boosting without a wideband o2 sensor!

i mentioned that i was using the emu, and it seems like a lot of people here, most notably MM has it working fine. however, i didn't re-wire mine, yet... because i'm a little scared to, but i will look into it..

i don't drive it hard so it rarely goes into boost but when it does, it's 4psi

hopefully I'll have my wb02 installed sometime this week

that gas smell is probably there because you removed your catalytic converter with the exoticspeed exhaust

I had the same problem stalling and backfiring. I have a greddy rs bov and fix #2 as well. It needs to be tuned. My car was overly rich with excessive ignition timing on the geddy map. Cant help with the emange didnt have problems with mine. My car runs great now a series of backfires when letting off the gas but not like when it wasnt tuned. The backfires are due to the bov being vented to atmosphere on a maf load sensor(goes rich off the throttle and the fuel exsplodes in the exaust).

why can't i go into boost without the wbo2 if i'm just using the stock base map?

i suspected the fuel smell was from running rich and whether or not my cat was gone, but i asked the guy literally ten times whether or not that exhaust came with a high flow cat and he said yes ten times on different occasions but there is a tiny bit of a language barrier so who knows. he said it was a cat and that it was legal, so if i don't got a cat, it's news to me...

thanks for the feedback, i'm still trying to get the ***** to re-wire the harness the way jeff's is, but i can't even get my comp to communicate with the emu so i'm reluctant and i know it's hard to help me out at this stage...

the software version i'm using is the 1.09 and the manual isn't much help to me.. i'll see if i can get it to work again..

oh yeah, when i installed the software it asked for a password but i just put in a bs number and it worked
just re-reading old threads again I found an update and will go try to install it, thanks...

update: now i finally got my comp to communicate with the emu by installing the 2.13 update, and now it says f/w version 2.16, and the other numbers say 2.13.

it keeps askin for the password (not the installation password) so i ignore it, and it seems to behave now, and then i loaded the unlocked map from jason, and then clicked the export button so i think i got the unlocked base map runnin now and disconnected several times to check if the password prompt came back and it never did.

i changed the one value from jeff's nvcs map but can't load the maddog maps because the extension .gcs is different from the .em2

i'm gonna go drive around to see if anything changed..
it seems to backfire a bit less and is getting smoother over the last few days and i'm probably learning to drive it better too, but low rpms still rough and stalls frequently at clutch-in

i put in jeff's airflow map also but not sure if anything has changed

can anyone help? my car runs like **** at low rpms, i think it's running rich, smells, fuel economy sucks and it stalls frequently in neutral. is there a way i can increase my idle rpms?

and there's a friggin wire somewhere loose so my remote doesn't work.... damn the mechanic who installed this thing... it's getting embarassing stalling and sometimes surging trying to take off in first.

It needs to be tuned, that's all.
No one can just tell you what needs t be done without actually being there.

Get a good tuner that has worked with rotary engines before (hopefully many times)
It may be your tune was not completely finished, they may have left it rich to avoid engine damage until they can complete the tune.

Why dont you just get the Access Port from MM and he should have a map for you that sould get you running much better and he will probably offer plenty of tech support.

I dont know how much it would cost to have it tunned but I dont think it would be much less then the AP and they wont be able to eliminate the CEL from coming on.

Yeah, I got the AP from Jeff, and the car is running better than it did with the EMU (stock greddy map). I posted a video in another thread in the em forums
