Just got an RX8...had a questions about the adapter...
Hi. I am a new RX8 owner and it looks like this is exactly what I was looking to add my MP3 library into my car. I do have one questions though......
I have a 7 inch Screen with 30 gig hard drive inside that I use for movies, mp3s,pictures and wanted to know if I hook this up and plug in the headphone type jack into my player will I be able to hear the audio from it or not??? I will be linking it directly with the USB port for MP3 purposes but mainly wanted to ask about the sound from the player while playing movies.
If anyone might have a similar situation please let me know.
Looking forward to getting my collection back in my new ride!
Thanks,
Hudson

You would connect a ground loop isolator between the AudioLink unit and your externally powered device. There is no certain type of ground loop isolator you shoud get. They are all the same functionally, so I'd go for the cheapest one. You may also need some adapters if the connectors aren't exactly the same as what you need (i.e. 1/8" stereo plugs, etc).

Yes, the device I have is called an iMovie. It is a prototype that never fully got released onto the market. It is a 7 inch LCD with external hookups you can hook to a TV, a USB port to load whatever files you want on it, it's a picture viewer, mp3 player, AVI an MPEG player, etc. When a USB cable is connected the screen comes on and turns blue saying USB MODE. While the cable is connected it is essentialy nothing more then a 30 gig drive. With the USB disconnected it is a player by itself. I guess I just need to make sure the 1.8 connector is in when wanting to listen to movies and disconnect it and plug in the usb cable when I want to use it with the Audio link for MP3's. I'll hopefully be ordering one soon within the next few days. The main thing I was worried about is my firmware.... but I am running version 9.73 so there should be no problem.

Here are a couple of pics where I installed the audio link, I spliced the wires of the cable coming from the head unit because that piece seems like an easier part to replace if I messed anything up. Plus I like the blue light in the hidden compartment
If you don't splice into the wires and have the unit installed in your cupholder, your ipod is facing the wrong way around.

Glovebox
because --
1) it was easy
2) I don't need to see the Ipod. I am happy with random within my playlists.
3) didn't want the ipod in the heat box aka cupholder area
4) too lazy to make the extencion... But may get around to that and move it to the hidden chamber.

Audio Link now ordered and USB 8GB Flash Drive ordered too!
I figured 8 gigs of music is enough to ride around with at one time.
also I just wanted to know if anyone out there that has the USB version could list what the controls are for moving from one folder to another, etc.
Many thanks ahead of time!

got my mp3 .. works .. mounting took a while since i removed the screw didnt try to pull hard enough .. put it back in .. then realized it was the right one .. dropped my thingy while taking it off .. went looking for a new one to finally unscrew it for the second time .. after than it was all good
right now i have the box hanging right next to lift/drop steering wheel level .. i want to double tape it next to that lever such that i can just plug the thumb drive right in under the steering wheel .. the same way i can plug in my girls ipod when she wants to
im hoping not to knock it off wiht my knees as i get in/out
added bonus .. some blue light from the unit and my thumb drive ... though if i tape it the other way around the light wont be visible .. its actually pretty strong and if there was a way to point it at the pedals .. it would look really sweat .. aluminum pedals iluminated with blueish light

In case you missed it I mentioned my IPOD install in the second post here:

It works pretty well.

OK....I finally had a chance last night to take the console apart and install the USB AudioLink. I tried what was mentioned in the post before trying to change folders using the CD up/down buttons but it didn't do anything. The steering wheel controls do work as expected.... up or down to change tracks...hold the button in to skip X amount of songs. Is there possibly something wrong as to why I can't jump from folder to folder rather then having to fast forward through all the tracks I have loaded????
Any info would be a great help.

Help!
So I just took my car apart and started to install the IPOD interface, when I noticed that the black wire leading to the connector that goes to the HU was not attached to anything. I don't see a place for it to go, so it must have been in with one of the other wires. But which one? Anyone still have theirs to check? Here's a pic. Even if I knew where it was supposed to go, not sure how I would re-attach it. Any ideas?

OK, it's all done! Special thanks to Donny for getting back to me via e-mail with the wire location. Can't believe he was near a computer on this beautiful Sunday afternoon! Lucky me...I thought I was stuck with my car in pieces. Tried to put the black wire back and tape to hold, but when I installed I got a loud beeping sound while the songs played. Obviously the connection was not secure - ground I'm guessing. I pulled it out and used a piece of solid 24 guage wire from the CAT wire I used to lengthen the cable and created a jumper to the black cable. Taped all up nice and secure and re-installed. Sounds great! Hopefully it's secure enough - will find out after a regular commute on bumpy I-287/I-95. If not, Donny said he would take care of it.
No problem finding "the bolt" as I took the silver metal piece off under the steering column. I never would have found it otherwise, but with the cover off, it was right there. Took it off, but when I went to re-install it, I tried to do it by hand as someone mentioned...and dropped it! But quickly found it, and using tacky stuff and the socket, re-installed without further problem.
By dropping the glove box, and pulling the radio out part way, I was able to get the connector in. That way I didn't have to pull the HU completely out, and didn't have to disconnect the A/C harness or the antenna - which can be tricky to get back in. After extending the cable about 18 inches with 24 guage CAT wire I routed it back to the secret compartment, placing the black box under it as several others have. Here are a few pics...
The wire fit in the tab where the accessory socket cover goes, so no need to file or cut any parts.
Ipod can sit in the hidden compartment or can be pulled into and past the cupholder for easy navigation and use. (I have more than the accessible 5 playlists - but once I'm in a playlist I want, I can still use the steering wheel controls to change songs.)
While I had everything apart, I added some heat insulation tape I got from HD for the cupholders - (went to 4 auto parts stores, but couldn't find the heat barrier others have used.) This should work OK. Insulation wasn't sticky enough to hold, so I used a little duct tape to help hold in place. Look obviously not important since it will all be under the console.
I also cleaned out the passenger air filters while I had the glove box down. Overall a very satisfying DIY project, and what seems to be a great product. I can't wait to drive to work in the AM....wait did I just say that?
Time for a deserved drink!

I am looking to something similar. But trying to make the mp3 panel into a door that folds down..... But I do like your simple elegant solution.
