Is the amp actually kicking into protection? Or is it just very hot to touch, but plays fine? I'll assume it's kicking into protection and not playing. Does it play fine if you keep the volume very low? How long does it take before it kicks into protection?
You are presenting the amp with a 4-ohm load, when it's stable down to 1-ohm. I'd try disconnecting the subwoofers all together and power on the amp. Does it still get scorching hot? If so, the amp is faulty. If not, try connecting only one of the subwoofers. Try it in series (8-ohms) first, then again in parallel (2-ohms).
