new battery? suggestions?
I had a hell of a day yesterday..
So sunday night i guess I left a light on in my car. 12 inches of snow later, i go to all the trouble of digging myself out of the snow monday morning and my car wouldn't start! I was kinda pissed at myself leaving the light on. So I got someone to give me a little push out of my driveway, into the street (downhill) and got my car going (very slowly, with an anxious snowplow driver behind me tailing me). Drove approx 5 miles, and stopped my car at work...
So i leave work several hours later, and it wont start again. I guess it did not have enough time to recharge the battery. Grrr.. so i had to call my girlfriend, she arrived 20 minutes later in the freezing cold (windy too) to help me jump the car. Well that took a good 15 minutes. ended up keeping my car running for 1.5 hours to try to recharge the battery. Almost didnt start again, but its been fine all day today. when I test drove the car last november (used) it had been sitting on the lot long enough to lose its charge and need a jump.
Should i get a new battery? And if so, what kind? I did a search and got some ideas on some brands but I'm just not sure if there's anything to consider in terms of fitment under the battery cover. Thanks for any help.

Optima red top! (or yellow top if you need a deep cycle for whatever reason)
they both fit, and the only thing you may need is a little extension for the + cable.. no biggie
I'm can't remember the model numbers of the batterys - do a search, but I think its 34 for red top or D34 for yellow

Optima red top battery. It's the 35 series. Make sure it comes with the plastic spacer- battery sits on top of this. It's a perfect fit and there is no need for a cable extension, or anything of the sort. Just know this though, when you swap out your battery the car will probably die on you several times. This should only happen during the first 5 minutes- computer thing- just stay in the neighborhood for a swing around the block and you'll be fine.

D35 dude, I bought a D34 cuz it was the last one left thinking it would fit, no dice. Thankfully my friend had bought the 35 yellow top couple of months ago and barely used it, so I traded.
If you plan on putting alot of electronics, get a yellow top. If you have alot of performance part under the hood, get a red top (Thats what I read from the Optima website).
By the way, they are an arm and a leg. $200 CAD for a yellow top lol

On a regular battery, once you drain them completely a couple times, they are seriously hindered for future use.
Batteries that have the deep cycle ability, (such as the yellow top) are specifically designed to be able to take that abuse. Hence the high price tag.
I'd buy a new one. If for nothing else, peace of mind.

Battery replaced, thanks for the help.
Although i did not run into fitment issues, I did have to shop around a bit in town until I found a place that had a battery that would fit. It was some hole-in-the-wall warehouse where they had anything from camcorder batteries to large boating batteries. Bought it and had it installed for $85 (yes, I paid to have it installed, I'm lazy, I was feeling irritated, and my car wouldn't start). Wasn't really looking for the "best", just something a little better than basic.
Anyways, very satisfied with their service and relieved that I wont have to worry about that for a while.
Another side note was it looked like one person was running the whole show at this warehouse. He had 3 cell phones on his belt and was talking on a landline portable phone and took 2 other calls all while installing my battery in under 2 minutes. Talk about saving on labor costs! Oh well, he was very prompt with his service and I will be going back there again, hopefully not soon.

On the upper right hand corner of their website it says Find Battery By Vehicle. Simply click put in year, make ,model, and then it will tell you both series for the yellow and red top.
Example; my 2005 RX-8 results,
Group # Description
35 (8020-164) RedTop®; Battery;
D35 (8040-218) YellowTop®; Deep Cycle Battery;

Not reading all that ****, but I just put in the Optima Red Top its number 35. I ordered mine through autozone and it came with the plastic adapters. For you up there ^. You don't extend the wires. That red plastic that was on top of the battery when purchased that you threw away because you were in a mad hurry to install your new battery. You should have kept reading. Thats a base extension to raise the battery. Fits just like factory.
One thing I will say though. It seems to pull a few to many cranking amps as it seems to be spinning up the starter a bit to fast, but that may just be do to me having a poor starter.
Either way car starts WAY WAY better and faster than before!

The website does say, but to save you time
Yellow top is for all you deep cycle fans. Its more for the audio generation as it will drain to death and still be ok. It is better if you have a bitchin car sterio and don't care as much about the quick burst power, but the long term power.
Red top is for quick burst as it has the highest cold cranking amps out of any battery. It also has a VERY high heat resistant making it the best candidate for our car.
