Another update... Flooded the car after stalling it reversing out of the garage. Used jumper cables to try and restart, but the crappy cables burnt out after about .0001 of a second...result...car battery completely flat...which makes doing the interior electronics a bit hard to complete. Charging the battery via a home charger over the next few days, then deflooding with new plugs on Monday...hopefully shouldn't set me back any further.

All the wiring is complete and in the car, and most of the trim has been put back in. Just the NAV hood and the radio (and ashtray) to be reinstalled....which has to wait until I can test everything before bolting it all back in... sigh.

Everything in and set up, all working a treat, except the motion of the Nav Hood...accidentally damaged the calibrator when I pulled it out....but no biggie. Just make sure everything is disconnected BEFORE you try to take it out of the car.

Car had been sitting dead after it was flooded, so here is a quick video of the de-flood...

2-I am planning on installing cams front and rear for tracking and il plumb them directly into the PC but what camera did you use.
3-ODB module what did you use and what software.
4-Im not sure you have this but you may know but I want my iPhone to work with it all but I want it to function as a handsfree kit any ideas.

Update.... JOB completed!! It's taken a while because I haven't had a day off between Feb 2011 and December 23rd 2011... but the Xmas break gave me the time to knuckle down and finish the install. Tested and working = Check. Tunes loaded onto Hard Drive = Check! Taking the car out for a spin on the motorway now (9:30pm) and a cruise around town, so happy!

Will post video & photos shortly, including a run down of the whole build. I notice my photos have disappeared from the rest of the thread, changed hosting company, will post again with all the relevant ones soon too.

Cheers to everyone that helped, or just chipped in with their 2 cents worth!

Dean

Waiting on those pics/video. The old picture links crapped out, so I'm excited to see this. If I can get my hands on another mini I might try this out for myself.

Sadly (but joyfully) , I have to swap my fully working and awesome carputer set up for a baby seat (;-)

So its for sale... a complete working Mac Mini Car Puter for your '8.

Message me if interested with an offer, will also put up a message in the classified section...

Package comes with:

MAZDA OEM NAV Dash with Lilliput Installed (Including Remote)
Nav Dash Control Box (For Illumination and motor controls) and Cables
OBD II USB Interface Box and cables
Carnetix Power Supply and Mac Mini Connection Kit
Garmin GPS Receiver (USB)
Reversing Camera (Complete High Stop Light Mod)

Optional: Mac Mini
OS X and Windows installed
Palmer Performance Dash Command (With GTR Skin Included)
Centrafuse (with custom RX8 Skin I built)
Garmin Mobile PC.

This set up is completely tested and working, and I love it, but the new addition tot he family means it has to go.

Cheers

Deano

Probably the way to go now. Dashcommand is available as an app, GPS apps (I use TomTom on my iPhone, works a treat)...only one drawback...

The SIZE. iPad is just too big to be practical...it's hard to get it fit anywhere safe,

Maybe if the rumours are true, Apple will be releasing a 7inch iPad shorty...now THAT would work well...

I've jest been re-reading my entire build, all the effort and money spent on getting it right, trying different things...hooking up mac power etc etc...

If only Samsung Tab 7" or iPad minis were out back then, life would have been soooooo much easier.

Fingers crossed an iPad Mini of the right sort of size comes out early November, then I can just run Dash Command, Tom Tom and my music on the ipads touch screen.....sigh.

Crap! The iPad Mini dimensions fit perfectly into the Nav hood widthwise (200mm) and depthwise...but height is gonna be a problem (134mm).... To top it off, the home button on the ipad would be hidden, which kinda makes the hardware useless...
I will keep investigating.
Pity, as it has everything a person would need, including Assisted GPS.

Contact switch relay question.

there are some of the mechanism to get the screen to switch off when the hood is in the 'down' position. Basically, when the hood is down, the contacts touch, completing the circuit, powering a relay, which switches the monitor off. The hood has some little flanges/stoppers which suit this purpose brilliantly. A bit of hot glue to hold everything in place, and voila! Works a treat. Press open, and the screen comes on.

Here is a screen test, hooking up a mac to the screen....

Lilliput in the Nav Hood

The lower part of the Nav Hood, external, with wire glued in place

Inside, with metal contact in place on stopper.

Upper hood part, external, wiring,

Contact on stopper, upper hood part.

The kit is ready to go into the 8 now...just sorting out the mac mini.

Will need to pick someones brains on the Carnetix 1900 hook-up, a few things are bugging me...but thats a bit later.
Hey Dean,

What kind of relay did you use to power off your monitor when the Nav hood closes? I'm finally getting around to Installing my car pc and any wiring tips you could give would be much appreciated, as I am a complete noob when it comes to wiring a relay.
