^ I live in the desert and in the hot summer months here in Vegas, it gets up to 120+ and my car is an 05 and it never had a dashboard crack in it. I don't know, but it may be how high the humidity is in your area and here in Vegas, it's pretty low humidity most of the time.

Hi and tks for the info. Is it really that easy to change the air bag? Do you know were I can get instructions to change my dash cover?

I have the same issue with a 19,000 miles car that sleeps and works 24/7 indoor.

Tks

you guys should get a dark tint on your front windshield...keep the sun out

but seriously, that sucks - if i didn't read this thread and saw the cracks on a 'for sale' car i would definitely suspect it was a cover up job after a crash.

Mine did the same thing. Luckily my air bag assembly was replaced under warranty. I'm not sure if the dash cover is attached to the Air Bag or not. Maybe someone can answer that here. I know the Air bay assembly was $1700 but that was dealer a quote.

Oh and my car was never wrecked either, it just started to crack.

Here is my idea to fix mine. Just started a week ago I have a 2 in crack close to the defrost vent. I am planning to remove the dash cover. Fill the crack with silicone.

then apply this to the entire cover...

Thoughts???

saw that but $300 for a replacement cover? the Plastidip is like $6 and it will peel off if it does not turn out right...

Mine has the same. I posted about it a while back ago. Was told to fix it but was
not told it was the air bag cover.
I use all kinds of stuff to keep it oiled/clean but it still happened here in Texas.

For your information:
The airbag cover is made of a thin plastic with a tear line incorporated internally for deployment. The appearance

This TSB is NOT the same thing...lines are the Subject Matter not Cracking...

THE thread issue is a Cracking of Dashboard material in RX-8..if your car is still under B2B Warranty this is covered (Cracking).

Unfortunately most are out of warranty when or if this occurs.

I had this problem with my car when I first bought it.

I complained about this to a local Mazda dealer while my warranty was still valid... and they said they would only cover 50% of the cost..... I still have the emails that show the dates proving that I still had warranty.

The only way you are getting mazda to pay for it is to buy a new one and then file a small claims suit against them.

It is the same thing, to some of us.
Cracks, lines ...all the same to some ppl
To me, It means the same. I have the cracks, they are really straight lines. Now I know it is the outline of the airbag. Cracks are as straight as an arrow. Guess I should call them lines.
They just make the car look bad.

The TSB Mazda are referring to is/are faint lines or mould marks where the Passenger Air Bag deploys through, some models (not so much RX-8) you can see a fine outline of the thinner area which is designed to break in the event of AB deployment.

IF you have Cracks an actual Split with fresh air between them and your car IS under 'normal' warranty, Mazda and your Dealer must renew it..

As far as a 50% cost payment..again I fail to see WHY a dealer would insist on this (or Mazda NAO), unless the car in question was outside the B2B warranty...and goodwill was the case...IF I had a B2B Warranty I would pay nothing towards it's repair.

Edit: B2B Warranty is 3 Years or 60,000 Miles..whichever comes first.

I have these cracks, and my Airbag light is on - related? Partial deployment? Is it gonna randomly explode and hit my GF in the face? Should I worry? hehhehe

I just got back from the dealership(before reading all this), and I kinda made a scene(manager was on vacation), I felt like I shouldn't have to pay for this and made it seem like they should take full responsibility for this incase something was to happen to one of my passengers and the airbag decided to pop out for no reason because of their crap material cracking. I also started a post cause I couldn't find this thread beforehand. I really feel like they should either have a recall on this, because obviously it's more then just one person with this issue... My only concern is will the airbag deploy if this gets to bad? I don't want to put my passengers in danger while driving in my 8.

Please take some of the drama out of this...

1. Your passenger Air Bag will not deploy because the dash material has cracked, it cracks at the weakest point so air bag can deploy when triggered in a crash.
2. This is not and never will be a "Recall", recalls are for safety, there is no safety issue, cracked or otherwise the bag will not "fall out" or deploy.
3. Mazda are not the only brand which this happens to as car ages.
4. No car stays perfect forever.

I agree with everything you said.

The one concern I have is that the only cars I've ever seen with this kind of issue were cars in very hot climates in which the dashboard was constantly and directly exposed to the sun for years and years. As we all know - and as others have said - sunlight is known to deteriorate that kind of material in cars.

Whether it is the RX-8 or another car, a dash board that cracks like that outside the aforementioned conditions is just not good and probably a material defect.

I always put the screen on my dashboard. So I know my dash is NEVER in direct exposure to the sunlight. If mine suddenly starts developing cracks I will for sure take the car for a warranty claim.

But you are right....no car will last forever anyway!
