Cracked Air Bag Dash

hello im new to the forum i just bought a titanium gray manual 2005 gt mazda rx8 .I have aquestion i could see on the dash of the air bag side the crack on the dashit forms a big H .Iwonder if the airbag was activated or the car was in a accident, that i dought since there is no signs of it.Maybe the sun since i live in puerto rico or the vibration caused it to crack. does any one have this problem .the car has 75,000 and i bought it in a used dealer so i have no previos history i will post pic later

Mine is cracked as well. Came from Miami. I guess the sun caused it to crack where the weak sections are for airbag deployment.

What sucks ass is you can't buy just the cover (so I've been told) just the whole damn airbag.

I bought mine in 2005 and I also got the H and I live in Puerto Rico also. Definetly that air bag cover was not designed for the tropics.:(

Jasonawojo 02-15-2010 03:49 PM

Mine hasn't quite formed an H yet, but noticed a crack the other day right in the middle.

Mines cracked also... there is another thread about this.

mine just cracked as well, sometime last week, about an inch long :'(

Braxxis 11-24-2010 02:22 PM

Yes! I am NOT alone lol. Mine has been happening for some time now (6 months?) I live in Naples, Florida. DEF NOT designed for hot weather. Stopping for some silicone and vinyl repair after work, not about to drop 300 - 900 that I don't have on a new dash/airbag.

9krpmrx8 11-24-2010 03:02 PM

Yep, mines cracked too. South Texas.

Z0oMzo0m 11-25-2010 12:14 PM

Wow didn't think it was that common. Thought it was just poor maintence on it.

SPHINX144 11-25-2010 01:38 PM

mine is cracked too, I tried to fix it with crazy glue but it didn't come out neatly and now I want to replace the whole thing.

i thought i was alone....I live in Miami FL and bought my '06 RX8 with 29k miles from Vero Beach FL it had a bearly noticeable crack. My warranty expired 4 months ago but I had put in the claim for the cracked airbag cover before it did. they said that Mazda was not willing to replace the entire airbag just because the cover cracked, that they were trying to figure out a way to replace just the cover. i called the dealer today to see if they had finally found a solution and the guy said that they had repaired one in another dealer near by. hopefully i get mine replaced soon this cold weather has made it even more noticeable....

cloudstrifex 12-16-2010 02:57 PM

Mine is cracked too... >.<

Sucks that this happens to you tropic folk. I would go completely bat shit insane.

Z0oMzo0m 12-16-2010 07:25 PM

^^ i try to ignore it being there, but its the biggest eyesore!! lol after Christmas goes by ima search for some car part outs and see if i can pick one up.

RX8SHNKVI 12-17-2010 07:55 AM

so I finally called the service guy at the dealer and he said to give him another week and half to see if "mazda has created a part number for just the cover" so they can replace mine..... hopefully i get this effing problem taken care of before the year ends..... :fingersx:

Bought my 2007 GT about one month ago. Silver with 36k miles. So far had the plugs and coils replaced, oil filter change, etc. Dealer says the rear drivers side strut is leaking. We had a cold snap here in Jacksonville FL this week and now have 2 CRACKS in the passenger side dash! Although it's way more fun to drive the quality seems much lower than the Nissan I just moved out of.

So would anyone advise trying for a dash repair or is the best way to go a new part?

^^. Another question to the forum. How can we prevent this from occurring, at least for us tropic folk?

mazdaverx7 12-18-2010 11:50 PM

those cracks are horrible!! when i was buying my Porsche 944, i had passed up a few cars with cracked dashes and purchased one with a perfect dash..with that being said, cars like our 8's and like the 944 (or any Porsche for that matter) should have better quaity of materials. i have never seen a cracked dash in an 84-85 or 86-91 RX-7 (earlier yes) and i often reflect on how much better the materials are that Mazda has been using..up until now that is..my 05 luckily has not started to crack but i will keep an eye on it.

plastic & vinyl cleaner and conditioner to keep the UV light out and keep the material oiled.
