They have a plastic piece that makes it into a single din. That's what the guy at corksport said.

I also agree with the price, but what I am more interested in is the wiring harness. I would really like to know what the wiring harness that is provided actually does. Like will it allow direct removal of the stock headunit or does the headunit still need to be relocated...

so, tha kind of price or better yet, what's the best price they going to offer for us. co'z if you guys think about it, they are trying to take avantage from us, asking so much money for a pcs. of plastic, if you get a kit for any other car IE. civic's toyota's etc. it only cost $15 to $20 Dollars, i understant no one alse is offering anything like this but $ 400.oo + dollars is TOO MUCH MONEY, I RATHER KEEP MY STOCK RADIO.

I know everyone, I thought maybe I was cheap or something. I think the 8 club has alot of members with deep pockets that don't mind paying crazy prices for stuff for the 8 but honestly it's an unreasonable price.

My whole reason for replacing my radio is to get a nav/video system in there and the one I like (from Pioneer) cost 1K at least so then I'd have to add another $500 for this kit....

I'm sorry, the parts for this kit don't even come close to justify the price.

Not only that, but there was still no answer to all the questions regarding the display, steering wheel controls etc.
Based on the information I read (and the pics I saw) so far, this would not be a worthwhile purchase for me.

I think we all agree that something like this would be GREAT...but not at this price, and not when so many questions remain unanswered.

I know I know...we could email them, but I'm not interested at this price anyway so it's not worth the effort.

The guy/gal at Mazda that said...

"Hey, let's make an integrated unit with the radio, AC controls...."

I know it's not nice, but I sure would like to:

I never knew I'd care so much about this, but this is the single MOST ANNOYING thing abou the RX8. Next car I buy...I'll have to pay close attention to this.

THEN.....THEN, Mazda sells all their junk for twice as much as they are worth. They don't even offer maybe a NAV radio replacement either.

THANKS MAZDA %&#()$&#)$(#*$#

There is another company that makes a 2DIN setup. The company is called Feast and they are charging almost $600USD. Corksport looks as though it is less bulky as the Feast unit where there isn't a huge metal case to stuff in the passenger footwell.

For those of you that can get it direct from Japan, this is the website for the kit. I translated some of the text for you.

Kanatechs
http://www.kanack.co.jp/kanatechs/TBX/TBX_T003.html

MSRP 45,150JPY (approximately 383.34USD by the final rates of 31 MAR 06)

Caution
When installing the kit, you will cut materials and handle electronic parts. The included instruction manual is directed for those with technical knowledge and skills. Also we do not warrant for damages to parts while installing, nor the damages from wiring mistakes.

When you install a aftermarket headunit, the AC will not work. But if you install the AC Control box, you will be able to use the AC again.

Their staff thats been with them for 2yrs can do the installation in about 1 1/2hrs. The kit can then be reverted back original equipment if you have all the original parts.

Difference between original equipment
-Unable to power Navs TV mode(???). Nav control sound effects will be gone
-will not display time, nor the audio mode display
-the response for the temp display may be delayed compared to original equipment
-cannot use ALC (auto level control)
-no sound effects for AC control
-Display and hazard switch lights will not respond to illumination level conrtol (i dont know if im translating this right)
-No more AMB button, has its own controls
-When the turning the ignition, the displays may be delayed or it may look messed up.
-heat controls and hazard will illuminate at ACC on regardelss of the light switch settings
-with option FPC-T001, remote controls may be used (how good, i dont know)

Caution when insalling
-Cannot be installed in a BOSE system car (I guess if your taking off your BOSE system you could still use it, but dont quote me on it)
-Can only mount aftermarket headunit that is within 172mm(w)x100mm(h)
-depth 172mm. however, space may be limited for connectors, wires, etc.
-if the antenna plugs(cable?wire? i dont know but they have plug) are too short then purchase an aftermarket extension
-you will need to cut off the heat/hazard control and install it in the included control box. you may use that box when returning to original audio if you wish.
-adds original info to the display

CURRENTLY DEVELOPING KIT FOR BOSE SYSTEM

Thanks for the translation No_NaMe. This had possibilities until I realize now that for (only!) ~$400+ US, and only if you don't have a Bose unit currently, you can pretty much (by this elegant design) trash your center console functioning so you can listen to some other unit, if it might fit in the limited space made available, if you don't either mess up the kit or your car while installing it. Wow just me. Next....

back to step one. MORE R&D for a more efficient route without the sacrifice of any of the function of the OEM buttons and displays.

@No_NaMe - Thanks for the translation, and the reality check. Most of us have returned to planet earth, where, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

For everyone interested in a replacement, there is also a project by CarMediaProjects.com that they are working on for a carputer.

Here's is the thread.

Unfortunately, at the time of this posting, this project is looking like all the other wonderful concepts that have been dangled before our eyes in the past.

In mid-January, it was daily info/feedback, and within a couple of weeks, that was no more. The last legitimate update from the guys working on it was on Feb 6th, where they said "In development, we are trying to make a harness extesion for the AC controls."
A couple weeks later, the next post simply said, "Still in development".
Not a single meaningful or useless post from the guys the whole month of March.

FWIW - I'd prefer to get one of their carputers installed and the touch screen to replace the headunit, instead of a 2-DIN replacement, but I'm tired of holding my breath for these projects. I'm still recovery from years of oxygen depletion re: a promised supercharger that delivers decent performance.

Part of me still hopes though, especially since a carputer is cheaper, and has many more options than the best AVN systems.

Slightly venting,
- Cesar -

Also, it does not say anything about if all 9 speakers for the BOSE setup can be utilized. If you want me to, I could try contacting them about if all speakers are used, but quite frankly, I think its a waste of time and money.

So has anyone actually bought a kit (Corksport's or otherwise) and installed it yet? I'm willing to pay the money, but i'd like to see if anyone has gone and put it in yet and would report any troubles with the kit.

I'm in the process of buying an indash monitor and carpc for the two dins.
