Audio Dilemma....

Audio Dilemma....
So guys, I have a dilemma on my hands....
I opened up the stereo to see what was wrong. The bass is BARELY audiable and I know there HAD to be somethign wrong because its the BOSE and you can barely hear the bass, so after reading a couple of how to's to get to the back, i noticed that whoever owned the car before me took no care in taking the stereo apart (the faceplate clips that attach it to the actual cd player were all broke among other screws being missing) anyways, here is the dilemma.
Instead of replacing the cd player with a stock head unit, I would rather put those 150-170 into a new one. SO i picked a double din touchscreen unit by either sony or kenwood. The question is, for the members who've run into this before, would you guys either upgrade the speakers (into component units) or just add a sub in the trunk?
Thanks for any info.!!!

The front 9" speakers cannot be replaced with aftermarket. You can replace the tweeters and rear 6x9's though.
I think you'll find that simply replacing the headunit alone will yield an improvement. Maybe wait until your new double-din is in before you make the decision? Maybe you'll now be happy with the stock speakers and just want the sub? Maybe you'll still think they suck and want to replace them? I'm just saying, wait to hear what it sounds like before spending money.

Replace the head unit and they worry about speakers/subs. Lots of times the upgraded sound quality from the better head unit (and amp in it) is enough to round out the sound. Plus some head units have a Rear Bass Enhancer that treat the rear speakers as subwoofers.
Decide if you want to do anything after you hear how it sounds w/ the new head unit.
