you're missing the economy of scale in your factoring of the cost for cobb to make 1 ap. The amount of money Apple pays for a part is far less then market rate since they can guarantee 1,000,000 units order (just making up a number). Cobb, on the other hand, might get some discount from their supplier, but the cut would be far less since they would be happy to sell 10 percent of that.

Just checked Jeff's website, he seems to have a new price of $594!!! I think this is great and will deff. boost sales. I know I will be ordering one as soon as I get the RB DR midpipe and he adds the "buy" button, must be waiting to finalize some things...

595 is still a bit steep but I understand he's trying to make a profit

 

Steep for what? $100-$150 bucks profit on each sale - shipping cost gives him about an hour on all your tunes at standard mechanic / tuner rates.

I've done enough of these things to tell you an hour is not a long time - and I cheat with my software...

I bet including shipping it takes him 1.2-2 ours per full NA tune... that means he is working for about $40-50 bucks an hour...half what a shop charges.

 

The problem with looking ONLY at the production cost of the hardware is you're totally forgetting the most important part of the Accessport.

The software.

The hardware and delivery aspects of the tuning probably didn't set COBB back much with their total R&D costs. The software, however, was comprised of programmers being paid labor costs for decompiling the Mazda PCM code and then adapting COBB's software to interact with all that code.

I've never understood the complaints about the cost for this device to be honest. This device gives you about 90% of the functions of a stand alone ECU at about 1/4 of the cost. Look up prices for an AEM, MoTec or any other big name ECU's and then tack on the tuning costs, dyno time and installation. Those devices still won't give you some of the functions of the COBB.

For the price this device is now there's no reason anyone should go without it.

 

Oh don't get me wrong man I'm ready to by now haha. Like I said I understand. He's making a profit. I'll pay 100 bux for his tunes. I was the first to suggest he charge Kane. Haha. I want his tunes. His wrk is a value to everyone and anyone with mods

Ever wonder why no one has jumped up to compete with Jeff?... There is a reason for that, trust me.

I'll be the first to say I have ZERO intention of charging people to tune their car - AP or not; to me it just ain't worth it. I'd have to bill out at about $195 bucks an hour just to make it worth my while, and even then I wouldn't want to do it.

The fact that you can get access to Jeff's tune for a hundred bucks or so is amazing IMO.

 

Totally agree, any stand-alone is going to cost at minimum a $1000, and with most systems you're always going to compromise something. The accessport is still miles above a piggy-back as well. I would say it's much better then a stand-alone as well, actually.

No - they understand the value of what they are purchasing.

Most RX-8 guys now (3rd owner, typically) are perfectly happy with 20's, neon, chopped springs and Home Depot intakes.

If I would have known that my house was going to lose $120,000 of its value in 3 months last year, I would have sold it.

thanks. that is what I was wondering. like say you tuned a car and the owner wanted to keep your map. and then say another tuner came along and made a new tune from scratch.
