This is a great DIY, appreciate it. Since this is much harder for someone like me with the stock airbox, I wanted to link to the technique I used today which does not require removing the airbox. Worked perfectly for me!

80k on car and 1st bolt broke off so had to remove entire mount. Would have been easy as pie if it weren't for the stud breaking off..suggest wd 40 a few hours b4 trying to remove.

In need of help...I think I flooded my engine, before I changed my ignition coils!

I just changed my ignition coils, after my mechanic ran a diagnostic test on it and told me that was my problem. He tied to start it, so I could et it home. But, it wouldn't start. It just turns over. I changed all 4 ignition coils, and it's the same thing. Could it be flooded? And, if so, what can I do, to unflood it? Plea, help me. I'm in the Army, stationed n New York. But, my car stays with my wife in Ohio. I need help, ASAP!!!

Hmmm

Might be time to invest in a couple of 3/8" extensions? LOL. How many clicks were on your car when these coils had to be replaced? Mine has 54,000

Ignition coil/flood issue update...

Well, I took some advice from a forum I read from here, and turned my car over for 5 seconds a time, and after doing that for about 10 minutes, with a break every other minute, it started So, everything is back to normal for my Shinka, except after I replaced the coils, I have quite a noticeable difference in power. I have more! And, my check engine light is on. I'm going to take it to Autozone and have them check out what it is. Hopefully, it won't be anything and it just needs to be reset. Anyways, thanks to all of you that post the DIY forums. It's great to know, that this site is here for me and my Shinka

Thanks for posting this note. It's really helpful to see photos and descriptions specific to remove the stock air box.

Are the more expensive coils better? Just looking at a few different ones at advance auto.

/\ As the saying once went..... ""You only get what you pay for"".....but not always...

Or put it this way..
I can buy a brand new and latest Mazda 6 Speed RX-8 P66M Manual Transmission (complete) from a US Mazda Dealer for say $2,300 USD ($2,200 AUD), have it shipped (fast) to Australia for total of $2,900 inc taxes....OR do I buy the same Mazda Transmission (apart from slight 3rd and 4th Gear Ratio difference) for $6,200 AUD here in Oz??.

There are some very experienced guys here who have tested and sell other Ignition Coils for many years, be careful not all are equal, and can result in other issues, Charles from BHR sells their own excellent Coil Kit which requires some minor modifications to install, or you can go with the updated OEM Coils for less $$'s....

They entirely work. Longevity? That is more in debate. However, given the price you pay for those, a shorter lifespan would be acceptable to a point. I haven't noticed anyone complaining about a shorter lifespan from them though.

Quick question about these NGK spark plugs, both are same exact, except one is leading and other is trailing. I was under the impression the plugs themselves are exactly same? If not what do I need, 2 leading and 2 trailing? Sorry for the noob questions.

Trailing: Buy NGK Laser Iridium Spark Plug (RE9B-T) 6701 at Advance Auto Parts

Leading: Buy NGK Laser Iridium Spark Plug (RE7C-L) 6700 at Advance Auto Parts

Was also going to get these for a set of wires

thanks

You do need 2 of each. They are not the same, a close look at the tips will show that if the web pics don't. Find a 'read my plugs' thread for easy pics. T for Top/Trailing, L for Lower/Leading

Plug wires are acceptable, not problems or drawback from those.

Hey another quick question about plugs. My friend has a 1985 GSL with a 12A engine, is it the same deal with that rotary and needing trailing an leading plugs?

I don't know enough about the 12A. I don't think all rotaries have always had 2 spark plugs per rotor, but I am unsure where the use of 2 plugs began. If it has 2 plugs per rotor, then yes, it will need a leading and a trailing. If it only has 1 plug per rotor, then no, it won't.

Do some digging on RX7Club.com, and you should be able to find that answer.

Though they do have what one could consider a leading and a trailing, both locations utilize the same spark plug, so all four plugs are the same.

NO not all 4 Spark Plugs are the same, different Heat range and in RX-8's case different length.

All twin Rotaries have dual ( 2 Leading and 2 Training) (4) Spark Plugs even far back as 10A of 1967.

Then with two separate Distributors with a single Contact Breaker Points in each Dissy.

The single Distributor started back in 1973-4 with the REAPS system (13B and 12A, really a 12B) with one single larger dissy but with two separate breaker points inside, also used in 1st gen RX-7....then came the dummy looking Dissy or ''Crank Sensor come EI Distributor'' in same location in 1985 FC RX-7~.

Then the current system from the FD RX-7~....RX-8 uses the same Crank Sensor as FD and some Mazda bangers of the late 90's.

I started the process today but due to it getting too dark and not having a light i stopped and will continue the process tomorrow afternoon

I went ahead and got the bhr kit along with the spark plugs

I got the new spark plugs in, and i know for a fact i got them in the right places along with using anti-seize.

The issue at his hand, when i disconnected the coil packs i forgot which wire goes to which coil.

I hooked them up, i know i deff got L1&T1 coils correct but im unsure of the L2&T2 coils. is there anyway i can find out before completeing the install tomorrow?

If i didnt explain it well enough, im talking about the wires from the engine bay tht connect to the coils
