Ill be doing my first coil/wire/plug change on my rotary this Saturday.. This site has been a HUGE resource, and I am ready to go.. I just wanted to clarify one small detail...

I wont be disconnecting my battery during this, so do I need to bother resetting anything? For example, the ESS brake pump reset?

Or should I be able to just fire it up after the job?

 

I'm pretty sure you don't have to disconnect the battery, but if you do be prepared for your car to act crazy once your done and reconnect the battery as it will be relearning all the fuel trims which is totally normal but will scare the **** out if you, you'll need to keep tapping the gas pedal to keep it running and drive around town for a while for it to get get back to normal. I wont be disconnecting it at all.. That's why I was wondering if I still needed to do an NVRAM reset via the 20 pump method.. I decided to just do it regardless.. Doesn't seem like it will be a bad thing.. But I may fire it up BEFORE I do it just to confirm it is running good, THEN do the reset since it sounds like it will run funny for a bit while it re calibrates?

 

If you decide to do the reste, then it could stall at the first couple of lights or stop signs you come to, so be ready for that, but it should settle out pretty quickly.
Please make sure you double check that everything is hooked up correctly, and that the wires snap or click onto the plugs securely.

 

Tanks for the advice guys! Ive done tune ups on plenty of my older rigs, but never my RX8, so aside from my question on the ESS reset, Im good to go! I've had this ride about 6 months now, and can say I would sell a lung to keep it going! RX8 for life! lol

 

Thanks to the op, just did the coil change and it was a cake walk. Took my time and got it done in 35 minutes.

did plugs last week and waiting on plug wires to show from Advanced, should be here Tuesday . oh yeah upgrade starter last month , That wasn't bad either. The DIY on it was spot on. gotta luv a good forum!

 

Changed my coils a couple weeks ago. They must've been in there for 60,000 miles... It was bad. Caused me 6 misfires. The bottom of them was almost all white.

 

are all 4 ignition coils the same?

Would these coils sold on this site be okay to use:

Yes, all 4 are the same. Yes, those coils are fine. Expect the normal change interval of about 30,000 miles. Could be as early as 22,000-25,000 miles however, so keep alert for those misfires.

 

Hi all, so I purchased a set of new spark plugs and wires along with 4 oem ignition coils.
Part number is exactly as what's shown N3H1-18-100B...however I got it bolted up and it doesn't connect with the connector!!

Can anyone please tell me what I might be missing? The old one fits just fine, and I even tried fitting my new IG coil on my bud's RX8 and it doesn't fit in the connector of his car neither! Its as if the edge of the connector is blocking it from going all the way in. Trust me, I've put in enough elbow grease but the connector just doesn't seem to go past half way, doesn't make any click and I can simply pull it right off.
I've been searching online and through the forums but I don't see anyone else with this problem.
I've compared the older one with my newer one and what SEEMS is that the older one looks just a bit more rounded compared to the newer one which has a more squared straight edge from where the connector plugs right in.
I have an '05 Rx8 GT

I purchased them off EBAY from what seems like a reputable seller. name of the seller was: crtperformance
he was selling quite a few of these BWD and the oem ones along with the plugs and wires

But does this make any sense though because its the same part number

An easy way to identify IF the Coils you purchased are actual OE...

On the side of the black Coil there are three rows of text information stamped into (concave) the coil body, first line is Mazda part number.

Anything else is a knock off product...not originals and can give performance/reliability issues.

I know this is a little off topic but what is the BHR coil part number ? are they D585?

Ray would be a better person to ask, but he has mentioned in the past that while they are based on the D585, they are modified from the D585 at the manufacturer. Just using a "D585" will not get you the same coil performance as what he sells.

I don't think he has ever provided the exact part number, and it wouldn't surprise me if he has exclusive purchase rights.

 

I have a question about my ignition coils. Ok I recently replaced mine and I found that they were glued onto the metal bracket with what looked to be gasket sealer. I'm not sure what benefits would come from this so I just scraped it off and put the new ones one. So my question is this is there a benefit from using silicone gasket sealer to sheald the coil?

 

No, no benefit. It might even insulator the coil more, which would be bad because the coils get hot and need to shed the heat.
