Got my key from transponderisland on ebay. It's the 525 version. Remote programming worked the first time, but you feel silly turning the key 3 times and pushing the door button 3 times...LOL. Getting the key cut was a different story. A couple key places refused to do it (didn't want to chance messing it up) and everybody tells you that it won't work unless the dealer programs it - yeah, yeah, I've been using the remote portion all morning. The dealer cut it for free, but the poor girl cut one part too narrow & couldn't fix it. After a couple retries, she came out next with a new key she cut and it worked.

Thanks for the DIY and the input from everybody!

Not to beat any dead horses here, but I have what I believe to be a simple question. I bought my 04 8 used and it came with 0 fobs. I bought the OEM Visteon Model 41805 remote on ebay - mint condition. Based on what I am reading, I guess I can't program this remote because I do not have an existing remote already programmed....is this true? I tried and when in program mode, my remote won't lock/unlock squat. Am I going to get screwed at the dealer to re-program this thing?

i thought that was the case but some say you can program a remote even if non are programed, you only need two keys to add more keys.

so go try the technique and let us know.

I do not have the keyless entry where you program the key...just the fob. Keys are just standard fair.

Isn't keyless entry standard on all 8's? Hm, I just looked up that model, and it's just a plain fob. I don't know if it's compatible with 8's.
I got one of the key/remote combos off ebay like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2004-...QQcmdZViewItem
(I only mention that one because it's an ebay store and the link should be valid for a while.)
I was able to program both the key part and the remote part with only 2 original keys (one regular, one valet,) and no other remote.

All 8s do come with keyless entry if I am not mistaken, and I believe the older ones came with just a fob...like this one I bought http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2003-...spagenameZWDVW

When I try programming it in "program mode", I get no response from the remote to indicate it accepted the code. It is only when I close the door does it lock/unlock, indicating exiting "program mode"

I was also told my a Mazda tech that you do not require an existing remote to program another.....this is just too weird!

HELP Plz!

Have no idea if Visteon #41844 is comparable/compatible with Visteon #41850. My guess would be that the programming procedure would be the same, but whether functionallity is the same is a question I can't answer. Maybe someone else on the forum can answer that question.
I bought a US model, but when I picked it up from the shipping company, the battery was dead and they had to jump start it. I tried both remotes and they did not work. I have tried the procedure on this site and still nothing. I checked the batteries on the remotes and they are fine. The person I bought it off of said 100% at least one was working (don't think he tried the other one a dealer). I took it to Mazda and they did the same procedure as what is posted in this thread and nothing. They told me I can pay to check the remotes or buy a new one and pay more for them to program it.

I just bought a remote off of ebay for $25 instead of $190 from the dealer. But my question is basically I have no remotes working, will I be able to reprogram the new one? If not what the hell do I have to do since mazda did the same thing this thread says to do.

I was in your exact situation last year. If you are still under the warranty, you'll pay $0. However, if you tell them the truth, you'll have to pay to get it programmed. Here is what i did:

I told them my remote just stopped working all of a suddden, and that I changed the battery thinking that may have been the problem, but it still doesn't work. They checked it out and programmed it. Quick, easy, and no charge. If you tell them that you bought the car without the fob, and then recently bought one...they'll make you pay.

I'm never one for being dishonest, however, its not like it costs the dealership anything to program my remote, besides taking 5 min. out of their day. I originally thought they would do it free of charge anyways, and call it good customer service. I guess I was wrong!

Good luck!

***UPDATE***

I bought my car from the states and when I got it both my remotes didn't work. Tried the reprogramming and nothing. Mazda Can. wanted $190 a remote. Thx to this forum/site, I purchased one off of Ebay for $25, went thru the programming sequence last night, first time it work with no problems Oh and you don't need a working remote just the key.

Thx for everyone's input and to this site!! Has saved me lots of money on many different aspects.

Happy Holidays to all!!

I read through all the replies and didn't see an answer to my problem. I have a '07 with two switchblade style keys. All of the sudden one of my fobs stopped working. My other one still did. I tried to reprogram the one that doesn't work but it never responds.

This is what I did. I do the ignition on off 3 times. I then press the door button three times. The door locks and unlocks like it should. I then press a button on my working remote twice and sure enough the door lock and unlock again. I then press a key twice on the none working one. The remote lights up, but the doors do nothing.

The weird thing though is at one point I got into a state where neither remote worked but then I started reprogramming with the nonworking key and it did work, but then the one that used to work won't any longer. It is almost like after my system knows about one remote I can't add the second remote.

Perhaps the procedures are different for a '07 or am I doing something wrong?

I know this is covered under warranty but I hate taking it to the dealer for something I might be able to handle myself.

Thanks.

Two things to keep in mind-

Key programming-

You MUST have at least two existing keys in order to add another new key. This will not work if you only have one good key, & want to add a new key. If you only have one good key(or have lost all keys) you will need to go to the dealer.

Remote programming-

IMPORTANT- When the instructions indicate you must press the door switch 3 times, they mean the door ajar switch located on the rear door, just below the front door catch.

Enjoy!
Great post thanks

This is what I was looking for. Does this work on 08 models?

Also anyone know of any after market remote start systems for 08 models, or who manufactures the transponders in the keys? Search Engines don't turn up anything for newer models. I have a up to date stand alone programmer, but don't know the maker of the chip.

Normally a installer uses a key that is already registered with the car cuts it so it is rendered unusable in the ignition. Then puts it in the transponder bypass box.

Yeah I've seen those inductor boxes you can buy.

The transponder chip maker lookup tables you see on sites list the older models of RX8 with the interface type, but no maker of the transponder. The glass or chip unit in the keys have no markings to identify them on most post 05 cars for security reasons I guess.

I'm hesitant to mess with the ECM on my 08 though cause there might be a security measure that disables stuff. If this technique works on a 08 I can get the blank keys cut, and program the key myself thus saving a lot of cash.

I do not see why it would not work.

Once it does make sure and cut the key so that it can not be used in the ignition if pulled out of the box.

If you do not have any that are already programmed to the car you may need to take it in to the dealership to have them add it to your ECU.

End all...

Hey all, At his point I have read through the entire thread front to back, shopped the stores, talked to the dealership. But i'm just going to throw my question out there see if I can't get an end all answer.

At this point I have 0 keys and one non working fob to my 08 . I know ive to get the car to the dealership reguardless to have the new keys programmed.

Here lies my question, if i am going for the flip key off of ebay what exactly FCC Id / Ic numbers do I need? So that I can have the dealer set them up?

Thanks

I believe that id KPU 41788 ic 4238A-41788 is the RX-8 key number. I've not seen those as uncut keys on eBay.
I got an id KPU41788 ic 4238A-41525 from eBay and it works fine. It looks identical with 4 buttons on the front. Some of the eBay keys have the same number listed but are 3 button keys (no trunk button). I don't know if they are really the same or mislabeled.

Yeah whatever you do don't get a three button unless you do not use your trunk.
