I must have missed the question that you posted.

It is always safe to program all the keys you have including the valet key. If for some reason there was another key added in between the valet and the ones you have and it did surpass the 8 that you can have on the car's ECU then the valet could drop off.
So if I programmed all the keys except for the valet key, is it still possible to code them all again including the valet key. I want to make sure that if it did drop off the car's database, I can redo the procedure and add it back. I don't want to end up at the dealer and pay a lot of money to fix this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yep, it doesn't hurt to reprogram to make sure it is not off the database.

If you try the valet key and it works then it did not drop off.

Allright, I will try the valet key and if it doesn't work, I will try and redo the preocedure. Would the valet key become key 3 or key 4 for the procedure? Thanks.

41805 vs. 41848

I noticed some discussion in this thread at one point about the Visteon model #. i can tell you with certainty that the 41805 is NOT the same as the 41848. They have the same FCC ID, and both transmit on the same carrier freq (313.85), but they do not use the same modulation frequency. I confirmed this using a DRT spectrum analyzer and RF tuner. The 41805 transmits a tone that is one semitone higher than the 41848. I don't have perfect pitch, so unsure of the frequencies of the tones, but they are absolutely different.

I scanned the tread but didn't come across this.

I just got a new key fob and was needed to program the remote. The key works, but I just got the remote. I followed the steps of the 4th thing and the lock unlock buttons on the remote work, but not the trunk button? Is there something I need to do special to program that or did I just not actually program it correctly?

Check the trunk lock-out button in the glovebox, remote button won't work if it is locked out there.

The key fob for my 04 RX8 just quit working the other day. None of the buttons work but I have the fob checked and it is putting out a signal. I tried the programming instructions at the beginning of this thread but after I press the door jam button 3 times the car runs through a lock unlock cycle but then the lock unlock button will not function. I ran through the steps 4 times 3 or the times was this issue and the other time the button was only partially functioning for example when I hit the unlock button it would act like it was going to lock but then it would immediately go back to unlock. If anyone has any ideas on this issue I would appreciate it. Thanks

That is what it is supposed to do.

Are you starting with a remote that is working?

Make sure and shut the key off to make sure it saves the new settings otherwise it discards them.

The fob is working to my knowledge. It has a new battery now and when I checked it, it was putting out signal. I tried to run through the cycle of adding the fob 3 times since its the only one but the steps on checking to see that the door lock and unlock button works never does so I am guessing that im not in the correct mode or its not letting me there. Unless the correct mode is the one where pressing lock kinda cycles and goes immediately back to lock is the correct mode because i didnt program past that point figuring that it was not correct again. Is that what the correct mode is supposed to be to program? Thank you for your response.

Oh and to clarify if you meant working as in functioning to lock and unlock the car the remote is no longer doing that.

2004 Remote Programming Tips

I was able to program my 2004 RX-8 using the procedure on the first page. I have NO (ZERO) working remotes.

I tried this procedure about 15 times before I got it and read this entire thread (felt like an idiot).

1st recommendation is to complete the steps quickly - (Faster than 24 seconds). The steps I am referring to would be turning the key on and off 3 times and then pushing the door switch 3 times. When I did the steps a bit slower it never worked.

2nd - The car will automatically unlock and lock the car, this is not a manual function.

3rd - I also pressed the unlock button on my key chain (not sure if that made any difference, but that is what worked) two times after the car locked and unlocked by itself.

Those with a 2004 that are unable to program your remote without an existing remote, don't give up and go to the dealer. It can be done. Patience is the key.

Damn I really need some help.

I live in Sweden and I got a European RX8.
I bought a flip key from Ebay, the US flipkey with the numbers:

kpu41788
4238a-41525 visteonumber. 41525

My old remote has Visteon number 41844.

And when I programming and getting to the press lock twice on the remote, it wont respond. Norhing happents, but my other two responds.

What is the issue here?

Could be a difference between US and Euro models, not sure.

In other news (I posted this in the other key code thread because I though it was useful.)
I haven't heard of these available anywhere before, but I found a place selling the key part of the flip key/remote for $19 shipped:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16641
It's the key blade and the spring loaded flip part. Mine is in rough shape, (botched key cut, had to replace the blade by hand.)
Ebay also has just the key blades for $7. I think I may go the ebay route, as it's not that tough to push the retaining pin out.

I also realized that the remote looks different from the remote from EU.
In US you have a red panic botton, we dont, instead we have a black "larm off" botton.

But I really want to know, if I should go after the FCC ID number or the VISTEON number. Which of those must match with my current remote?

new retractable key

Hello everyone,

I just bought a used 04 RX-8 and got 2 regular keys and a valet key but no fobs. The dealership then sent me a retractable key/remote (as a good gesture i guess ). The key was precut and does not match the original keys at all. I was able to program the remote by following the instructions on the forum (a wonderful forum indeed).

I read a post on this thread saying just the keyblade on the retractable combo can be replaced. I went ahead and bought one on ebay(will take 7-10 days to get here. Its from Taiwan) last night. Is it true that it can really be replaced?

Also, on ebay, it says that particular key works for any mazda retractable key/remote. Will it really work for my 8?

First of all, did you buy a US or EU Rx8? And what is the visteon number on your flip key?

Wonderful- life,

I just read your earlier post. If the visteon number is something that concerns the remote, I was able to program the remote fine.

The problem is with the metal part of the flip key. Do you know if that can be replaced?

What you need is a blank and, yes, they can be replaced. Using a small allen you remove the old key, insert the new blank, then go get it cut to match, ideally, another functioning key.

Yes thats because you have a US RX8 and I got a EU RX8 thats why mine didnt got programmed. You just need a new blank key. Just order it, and get it cut and replace the old key with ur new cut one.

You need to buy fobs with matching Visteon numbers on the back. Visteon may be a company that manufactures them.
the ebay auction I bought one from for $17 says you must get the matching visteon number in order to work. mine is 41848 but get what your original number was

And finally, after long wait,i am doin this post in a state of hapiness!

Why?Because we finally managed to program a retractable key and a remote for the European Rx8.And we managed to do that with much less money than the dealer asked me.
I 'll explain:I found a used retractable key - remote (key was already cut) from ebay.co.uk with UK specs [visteon 41787],a non-cut key from ebay or a Hong Kong site,
and i allready had two spare keys (one didn't open the compartment box,its caled vallet key i think) and no remote that was working
And we did it!Retractable key and remote are fully functional! No way to pay 320 EUR that the f@#$@ing dealership asked for a programmed remote...
But one thing: don't ask me how those two were programmed!!I don't know.A friend of mine that is Mazda technician did it and i don't know if he used the method found here

UPDATE:when we tried to program another one which was Mitsubishi or sth,it didn't work.So watch out and buy only Visteon remotes,at least for the Europeans
