DIY: Code your own key / remote
Yes you need a working remote in order to initiate the programming sequence.
If you added a battery to the prexisting remote it should still work for the car since it is in the database for the car.

my flip key situation...
well, i finally got it figured out and thought i'd share in case some of you have the same problem. i had one working remote, and got the switchblade key for xmas. i followed the instructions and couldn't program the fob to work. i took it to a nearby dealership, he couldn't do it either. he was really nice, kept trying, didn't charge me anything, but just said it wouldn't go into "program mode". i took it to my dealership - they charged me $59 plus tax, but whatever they did (i didn't get to watch them) worked.
so...if you're having trouble with your flip key, you just might have to bite the bullet and pay to get it programmed. thanks to everyone who helped and posted comments though!

The initiation for adding the remote to the car's database signals by locking and unlocking twice then a person presses a lock or unlock on the remotes that a person wants added.
The first remote to be pressed needs to be an already existing remote for the car.
To start all doors, trunk, and hood need to be closed.

I have a question about this... What if you don't have a remote at all and you only have a key... can you still program an 05 key with the remote? there are couple on ebay that are uncut and i wouldn't mind purchasing it if it can be done.
Thanks
Thanks

i think you need two keys to do anything... ie add a third key or add a remote.

That is correct Swoope a person needs at least two previously programmed keys and at least one remote that is functional.
If a person doesn't have these they will have to take it to the service department so they can use the WDS to program them to the car.

I also just receives my blank and had it cut at lowes, it seems like it didnt take and may have be minorly miscut. So I took it to Ace hardware and they tryed to fix it. I have tried the D.I.Y. steps many times but its not taking. When I put the new key in the lock light flashes fast. Anybody have any suggestions before I hunt down a new key blank. Last time I got it on ebay from someone in th UK.
Thanks

You could already have 8 keys attached to the system. Looking in the Shop manual it looks like it needs to be changed with the WDS at a Mazda service department.
If you take the route of taking it to the dealer make sure and bring all of your keys, well at least two of them that you will use.
If you got a new key blank it may have the same result if 8 keys are already attached to the Immobilizer system.

Then it could be the key is not in the frequency range that the ECU expects.
www.mazdaparts.com sells the blanks that are made for U.S. cars.

My new fob also reads:
FCC ID kpu41788
but
IC 4238a-41525
Visteon No. 41525
Got it from REMOTEOUTLET http://stores.ebay.com/REMOTEOUTLET_...QQftidZ2QQtZkm
Any thoughts?
US remotes do not work on European specification cars.
The immobiliser part though works OK.
Try buying one from a European ebay site.
I bought mine from UK and it was programmed with no problem.
I do not know if it is always the case but on my UK Spec remote the "i " button is black, not red as on the US spec remotes.

FOB Remote
Well I guess I will add my experience to everything. I also bought a remote from E-bay and decided to have it programmed to my 2004 RX-8. When I got my car all I had was 2 programmed KEYS, no remotes. I tried the procedure from the threads and could not for the life of me get my remote programmed. So I figured since I had no previous remotes programmed that I needed to take it to the dealership. When I got to the dealership they were more then happy to program my remote for me free of charge. The guy went out and did the exact same procedure with the new remote. Of course nothing happened and I told him that I thought you needed programmed remotes to add a new remote. He said no that the information was incorrect. He told me I had a bad remote. i thought he was just trying to get me to buy a new remote, so I asked him to do the same procedure with a brand new remote from their stock. I made sure all numbers matched my remote. He went and brought back a brand new remote and added it to my car with the same key 3 times and door switch 3 times trick and everything worked fine. So to summerize this all up, you DO NOT need to have previous programmed remotes to add new remotes. You DO have to have programmed keys to add new keys.
Order of programming
I am going to get a 2005 Switchkey from ebay and try to rpogram it for my 2004. I've only got 1 maaster key and 1 valetr key, but according to this thread that should be OK. I only have one remote, but also should be OK according to this thread.
However, I can't seem to find which is the order--do I attempt to program the key fisrt or the remote first? Does it make any difference?
I'm ordering 2 switchkeys tomorrow and hope to have this ALL fiigured out by the time they arrive. Any and all advice welcomed, even if it is restating things already said in this thread and similar others.
Thanks loads!

The number on the right for mine is 41525 and it works fine.

(A little tough to see in the pic but my camera will not do close shots well.
)

Alcimedes was it the key or the remote that didn't work when you had the issue?

I bought a switchblade key and remote a few months ago on Ebay. I bought one advertised as the one on the left (by FCC # and IC #) in alcimedes' picture but received the "wrong one" one shown on the right. I was upset about that but it turned out the "wrong" one programmed just fine. I don't know what is caused the problems other people have had with theirs but it may not actually be related to the IC number. You may just need to have the matching FCC number (KPU41788). Maybe they just happened to receive bad modules.
