You are correct. I was thinking of the wording that instructs how to code a second or third remote. My bad.

So after all this work, I somehow lost my key. Anyone know of other places to buy a blank key besides Rosenthal Mazda? Looks like his prices went up.

my remotes are the 04s. okay i lost my old remote, and so i don't have a spare. the one i am currently using died on me, i replaced the battery and it still doesnt work. i'm trying to reprogram it but it doesn't seem to work. i called the dealership and they're charging $45. there is no way i am paying $45 for a 5 minute procdure. I've been trying to reprogram the rmote with no luck and no way to tell if the remote is even working. can i even do the reprogram with one remote or am i gonna need a second one? for now i'm using my keys to open the car, but that sucks haha.

Are the trunk, hood, and doors closed completely after you initiate the programming sequence?

The door locks should lock and unlock twice quickly to tell you you are in the programming mode.

yea they do the lock unlock thing, and i get to the part when i have to press the key fob button twice, and nothing happens. everything goes right until i get to the key fob part.

I recently got a combined key-remote and easily managed to programme the key part using the instructions I found on the forum.

I have problems though programming the remote. Could it be because I only have one original remote?

OK here is my delema, I had two original keys--I was one of the first wave to buy the 05 key for my 04--I programmed it and it worked back in the day, one of my set of key remotes didn't work after that, no big deal because I had the 05 and an 04 remote that worked and all three keys turned the car on. Fast forward to today...I lost the 05 key so I bought a replacement and got it keyed--so now I have a set of 04 keys with remote that work, an 04 key with a remote that does not work and my new 05 key that I need to program - can I still program the remote on the 05 key by myself? And another alteration to the riddle--the 04 key that I have with remote that works, one of my friends has right now (long story) - do I need to get a hold of that key before I try and program the new one?

From what I managed to understand you need two working keys to programme a new key.

To programme a new remote you only need one working key and one working remote.

I suppose you know the procedure since you have done it before.

There is a maximum number of remotes that you can programme to a car. (I am not sure how many). If you have already reached that number then I read that by programming a new one, one of the previously programmed remotes will be kicked off the car memory and will not work any more. I have not tried this myself so I cannot be sure if this is the case.

That is correct. The reason for this is so a person couldn't add a key with just one programmed key. (like when in for service or valet).

Don't hand the service or valet a key ring with more than one programmed key for your car...

Ok, I've read all of these posts a few times, so here is my problem:

I bought an 04 last week, and the car only came with one key and no remote. The dealership hooked me up with a remote. This was late in the day on a Saturday, so the service dept had left. I was able to go through the steps to program it, but when I get to the part where you press any button on the remote twice and the doors are supposed to lock/unlock, nothing happens. I've tried it about 10 times, but still doesn't want to work. I would just go to the dealership that I bought it from, but its about 1 1/2 hrs away. Just today I stopped by my local dealership, and they told me that they charge $110 just to look at it! It's supposed to take like a minute or two, and they are going to charge me over a 100 bucks! What morons!
Anyhow, I'm trying to avoid having to make the drive, SO...anyone have any suggestions on what it might be? I'm tired of locking/unlocking my car with the key!

Perhaps they gave you the wrong remote? The numbers on the reverse side should be:

Visteon Model #41848
FCC ID: KPU41805
IC: 4238A-12076

If the numbers are different from the above, the remote is likely not for the '04 RX-8. Make a trip to the dealer and ask for 2 keys and 2 remotes. The car came new with that plus a valet key, so he should be obligated to provide the same thing.

In order to program the remote you have to have one working remote for the car to enter the programming sequence the working remote needs to be pressed twice then the one that is being programmed.

They should program it for free if you bought it through them.

I have that FCC ID #, and IC. My Visteon model # is 41805. The dealer I bought the car from said they would do it for free, however I am just trying to avoid making the 1 1/2 hr drive down there just to do it. It would be nice if the dealership here would just do it for me, and not charge $110!

Hi all!

Where are you guys getting just a blank key? I have the transmitter working but I need to have a new key cut. I've called a couple Mazda dealerships and only one has offered to special order the key portion for me ($50) and even then they were positive it wouldn't work and I'd be wasting my time/money . Anyway, this a reasonable price? Or are there cheaper alternatives? Mazdaparts.com looks like they only sell the keys as a single unit.

you can get blank keys from the dealer or rosentall mazda in the vendor section....

as long as you have two other keys you can do it yourself..

Thank you for your responses. I ended up ordering the key from Rosenthal as my local parts department is trying to charge $20 to just cut the key and is still quite insistent that the key won't work anyway. Can i just have it cut at Home Depot or something?

Also, is there a special way to remove the key portion from the transmitter? It looks like I can just pry it apart, but I wanted check with you all before I made an attempt.

You can have it cut just about anywhere. Better to use a place that does a lot of key cutting.

If you flip the key out inside the chanel close to the key there is a little clip that needs to be pushed and then pull them apart easily.

I got a retractable key for my o4 a few weeks ago and managed the programing for key and remote with reasonable ease. This weekend I just realized that 2 of my remotes no longer works. I've read here that there is a limit to how many keys or remotes you can have. I had 2 keys plus valet key and 2 oem remotes plus 2 aftermarket remote with engine starter. With the fifth key programmed, I've now lost function of the 2 oem but still have the 2 aftermaket. Anyone know why and whether I was suppose to bring all the remotes into the sequence somehow when I did the programming? Thanks...

Yes when you program the new remotes you need to program all remotes that you want to use for the car.

Otherwise they will drop off of the list your car has.

I believe the shop manual said that the limit is 8 remotes that can be compatible with the car at one time.

Thanks 4yrs. I'm curious as to why the aftermarket remotes still works eventhough I did not use them at all in the sequence. I read the instruction over and over again and while it certainly mentioned bring in a 2nd or 3rd remote, it isn't so clear that you have to bring all of them in and exactly what you do with them. I assume that I'd simply press on them twice, check door and press on another twice etc. Will try it this weekend.

Im having issues programing this remote the instructions do not mention:

For the key it does mention that you need to place two prior keys in order to get the third (or new key) to work. It doesnt mention this for the remote. My remote (the only one) just stopped working and the battery to the remote has been replaced. Do I need a prexisting remote inorder to reprogram the remote?
