Did you purchase a factory keychain type FOB for a 2004 or did you purchase a switchblade key? You need to get the exact switchblade as described in this thread. Check what the Visteon and FCC codes are. Below is a picture of the codes where you can find it in the switchblade.

Sorry for your loss, but sad to say that you'd have to bring the pink slip to the dealer. They are the only one who can order you a new set. It will not help, and even if you were successful programming a switchblade FOB, with only the key blade you have that was left from the fire; you still need a working transponder to start your car.

Beyond Frustrated

So, I have purchased two sets of fobs at this point, and none of them have worked.

My 04 RX8 was manufactured 12/2003.

Visteon Model: 41848
FCCID NUMBER: KPU41805

I spoke to another member of our Mazda group, who has two RX8s, and he told me which fob to purchase, so I did so.

I got the remotes, put my car into programming mode, and nothing happened when I pushed the button on the remote two times. I tried this with both remotes, and I even put brand new batteries in them, to no avail.

So, I took the remotes with me to a meet, and we tried them on one of his RX8s, which are also 04s, and they did not work.

To insure that it was not my car that was the problem, he programmed his fob to my car and it worked just fine!

I contacted the seller and they stated that, if those did not work, they would not send out new ones as it is not their remotes, to just return them.

Thinking that it must be a problem with that seller's products, I ordered two more from a different vendor.

Those came in today, so I immediately went out to my car, put it into programming mode, and again, no response from pushing the buttons on the fob twice.

I am really at a loss. I am contemplating trying to switch to the switchblade key, but just want to make sure that there are no known issues on those.

I read something that said that the one that I need for an 04 RX8 is:

Visteon: 41525
FCC ID: KPU41788

Does anyone know of any reason that this would not work?

When I go to the vendor page for this, it says that it is NOT compatible with a 04 RX8, but I have read multiple places that say that it will.

I bought this car with only one key and no remotes, so this has been a bit frustrating! Any help you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated!

The #41525 is the one I bought from The Remote Superstore that works for my '04.
There are other things that can go wrong, like the antenna behind the bumper, but the '04 keyfob issue is pretty common.

There is no concrete answer to your question, at least I don't. The reason many of the members in this forum went with the switchbalde key FOB is for that exact same problem. Another reason is when the 2004 key chain FOB runs out of battery; letting it sit for the battery to drain without replacing it before going dead, the fob seem to reset itself to default and loose memory of the factory keyless entry/exit program it originally had. Your friend's key chain FOB probably still retains the original program from the factory, and why he was able to program his key chain FOB with yours and retrograde back to his. Which is probably why the programming instruction in this thread does not work with the replacement 2004 key chain FOB.

That is why this thread is created, it's generally for the switchblade not for the 2004 key chain FOB. And to summarize it all up, I have compiled my responses including some links to the instructions about opening and programming the switchblade FOB:

I also helped other members in this thread that came across the same problem you have and were very happy with the switchblade FOB.

Going over through the thread, there is only one person that reported to have successfully programmed the 2004 key chain fob with the instructions here; unfortunately, many others and I were not, that is why we opted with the switchblade.

This is the ONLY information that you need:
FCC ID KPU41788
VISTEON NO. 41525
IC 4238A-41525

The IC numbers may change but you need to match exactly both the FCC and Visteon numbers before you purchase a MAZDA switchblade FOB. I have purchased both of mine from a seller in eBay who had a CX-9.

RaXtaman8 and Enrique2014:

Do you have four (lock, unlock, trunk, and panic) buttons in your keyless entry FOB? The Switchblade key should look like mine, attached below. Also, do you know where the fcc ID and the visteon # etched in the FOB?

Make sure you have the right Model.

Old 2004 FOB:
Visteon Model: 41848
FCC ID: KPU41805
IC: 4238A-12076

What you need to buy:
Visteon Model: 41525
FCC ID: KPU41788
IC: 4238A-41525

If any of you guys are wondering, the attached picture below is where you will need to look for the Visteon Model and the FCC code in the prefered (four button) switchblade key.

CR1625
is the battery for the switchblade FOB. Just make sure you purchase a Visteon not a Mitsubishi as a few members have mistakenly purchased.

Click on this link for replacing your Switch Blade Key Battery and the inside will look like the attached picture below where the Visteon and FCC codes are etched.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, even if I have a 2004 RX8 with the old remote (Visteon Model 41848 - FCC KPU41805), I have to replace it with the switch blade remote? And the switch blade remote will work with the 2004 RX8?

Correct, only one working key is needed to program the keyless entry of the switchblade FOB. But, two working keys if you want the switchblade transponder on the ignition.

The picture is the right key, but you need to ask the seller the of the right Visteon model and KPU code.

I actually had trouble following the instructions for the Key programming part. It worked when I did everything quickly, i.e. key in, ignition on, ignition off next key in ect. all very fast. no waiting. Worked like a charm.

Ignition Switch Replaced

Hi guys, I have a 2004 Mazda Rx-8 that used to be in pretty bad shape but I cleaned I up, swapped the automatic tranny to a manual and replaced the whole fuse box with attached harness as well as a ton of little fixes and refurbishing on minor things. The issue however is because the car didn’t come with keys I ordered a new ignition switch with a new key and installed it but now whenever I try to start the car, Everything lights up on my dash and radio and whatnot, but I get a flashing anti-theft light on the dash and the starter won’t even click. I’m assuming I’ll need to reprogram the key but since it’s only the one new key, does that mean a dealership is the only option?

2004 rx8 cant program key remotes/fobs

So I have looked all over the web, ordered multiple fobs, and still can not get the keyless entry to work on my rx8. im about to give up!!

I bought a 2004 RX8, A month ago with no remotes, only 1 key. so i did some research and bought a remote. Visteon # 41805 fcc:kpu41805. did the programming procedure correct and it wont program. so i do more research, finding out that the 04 rx8 made prior to july 04 are a different remote, so i order the other remote which is Visteon # 41848 fcc:kpu41805. This also does not work. So i found the Mazda Keyless Computer unit but when i look on google, i cant find what remote goes with it, can anyone help?

Here is what the yellow sticker on my unit says:
PARTS ASSY KEYLESS
FE03 67 5DZ A
3J10B
VISTEON 41872 43

Do i need yet a different remote or am I missing something? As i said, i did the programming procedure correct:
key on, off 3x , close open door 3x(doors lock and unlock), hit unlock 2x (nothing happens) use 2nd remote hit unlock 2x(nothing happens), close door (doors lock & unlock)

Just adding a note to this thread that I was able to successfully code a new AKE/credit card for my 2009 with Forscan v2.3.60 using Service Functions/RKE Remote Keyless Entry. (I realize my car is a Series 2 but the information is relevant to any RX-8 with the AKE). Forscan of course also works successfully to code new starting keys as well (I have coded multiple keys for my Series 2 and also my previous Series 1 (2007 GT).

Note that I only had one working AKE before so two are not required to do this. The AKE was purchased from Japan (much cheaper than dealer) and was a genuine Mazda part NFY7-67-5RYB.

I’m always happy to get more tools to work on my cars. Before I pursue the Forescan option has anyone had success when starting with only one key that fits in the credit card key fob? I possess 2 credit card key fobs from another parted out 8. Both need programming to work with my car.

I have not had the exact situation you are in but all I can say is that Forscan has always been able to add keys for me with no issues. I've bulk erased keys (when I got my 2009 Forscan indicated that 3 keys in total had been programmed for my car however I only received 2 so I erased all 3 and then successfully programmed the 2 that I had). I've also successfully added individual keys in addition to those I had that were already programmed. As noted in my post above I successfully added a new credit card fob in Forscan, however I have not re-programmed a credit card fob that was originally coded for another car.

Given the relatively low cost of Forscan it's still substantially cheaper than paying the dealer to program keys. You can even get a 2 free month trial of the Extended Licence to try before you buy or purchase the Extended Licence (USD$12 for 1 year), plus you will need the USB to OBD2 adapter. From my research the USB adapters (for the PC version) seem to run from $35 to around $60 depending upon which model you get and where you purchase it.

I tried to use Forscan to see if I can program an AKE key for my Mazdaspeed3. Didn't see any options to do so. The options that look like that they should do the programming don't do anything. Then again, I only had one AKE key when I bought the car. There is supposedly a DIY method to add a 3rd AKE key, but you need two working AKE keys to begin with.

At least I have employee rates for key fob programming.

Programming the remote portion of the switchblade type key is pretty easily DIYable. You can even do it without any tools.
