I just set up a new key and it did take a few tries to get the timing right.

My concern is, I just can't remember if I had the blinking red key light on the the dash before I tried to link the transponders to the car or not. I still have that blinking red key light even after I have disconnected the car battery, as well as, when either keys are not in the ignition. My 2004 keys still work but I always have the whole switchblade key FOB in the car key chained with the 2004 key each time I am driving the car.
Could both of you tell me if the red key light is something pre-existing with the car or I may have caused that during my attempts to link the used switchblade transponder to my car?
I had a 2004 keychain FOB that stopped working and purchased a used 2005/6 switchblade, were yours brand new and own a 2005/6 RX-8? Likewise, my locksmith had that initial problem where the newly cut keys only work in the ignition then took him another half an hour going back-and-forth turning the key in the key hole and grinding the key until both newly cut keys worked in all the doors, trunk, rear pass-through door, and the ignition.

Just a general thanks to Grace and others for all the answers in this thread. I am ordering an eBay switchblade with the right FCC for my 04 since my OEM fobs don't work anymore even after I have replaced the batteries.
I'm sick of using the key to get in the door.

You're welcome! CR1625 is the battery for the switchblade FOB. Just make sure you purchase a Visteon not a Mitsubishi as a few members have mistakenly purchased.
Click on this link for replacing your Switch Blade Key Battery and the inside will look like this where the Visteon and FCC codes are.

Yup, got Visteon 41525 and FCC ID: KPU41788. I think I am good. I only got for the moment as I want to make sure I get everything to work first. I'll post up success or any issues. Right now the fob and key are in the mail.

PIN required
Hi.
I recently bought a 2004 model and I want to program the valet key. Lost the other key. Now I need a pin to do that. Can anyone assist with this, if I give the VIN?

Sorry if that sounded lazy, I have been reading these pages back and forth now and it seems that the thing that solves this is to reprogram the key. I did it but it didnt solve the "honk when locking" problem..

If anyone needs a key made in NYC, Star Locksmith has switchblade blanks and will cut and program the key to start the engine and open the doors and trunk etc and the key works on the doors and trunk. Price was $160. Dealership tried to charge me $491 for what i got done in less than 10 minutes. I only had 1 key and they used a machine to program the new key to the car.

$160 is way too expensive. I bought the key for about $50 from ebay I believe and then went to my local dealer and they cut it for me for free. Took about 30 seconds. No questions asked.
Then I just had to program it.

Hi there..I read through the pages but didn't seem to find an answer.
I have an 08 with the advanced smart key..i lost one of the emergency keys but still have the bigger part itself. I'm trying to figure out whether or not I can program a switchblade key to my car? I want to leave the credit card fob at home and use the switch blade instead.
Thanks in advance

Has anybody successfully programmed a AKE remote using two working AKE remotes?
I understand the dealership is the only place that can program a second remote when in possession of only one remote but..

magixpuma, your basic steps worked for me the best!!! Although, I appreciate all of you guys comments on how to program an Mazda RX-8 remote fob!!!
1 sit in car
2 open driver door
3 put the key in move it
to lock to on
to lock to on
to lock to on
theres a small button in the door jam with a rubber stopper on it press it 3 times
now check that the door buttons still work and lock and unlock the doors.
then press any button on your key fob twice. now be patient cuz it takes like 5 seconds for it to first work.
MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS ALL QUICKLY!!!! 30 secs and under.

Great Info! Have 04 mazda rx8 grand touring auto with 2 keys.
The FOB only transmits a signal to lock/unlock/pop trunk. The key has a microchip that needs to be programmed......
you need AT LEAST 2 keys that are already cut/programmed (this can include the valet key) to program another key, after having it cut.
If you don't have 2 keys already that will unlock/start the car you will have to get the new key cut (anywhere can cut the key so it unlocks the door) AND you will have to get it programmed so it will start the car. You can get the programming done at a dealership or at select locksmiths.
Once you have those 2 programmed you can program another.
If your FOB goes bad y565 Herbert re Rd exercisable, ou don't need any working ones to program the new one. All you need is ONE functioning key (fully functioning, unlocks and starts car). Use that key and follow the procedure to program the FOB.
If you have an '04 you CAN buy the switchblade FOB with FCC ID: KPU41788. It will program correctly.

Hi, I wanted to reinforce this message board. Both of my keyless fobs died on me, so I needed a new one. After searching this board, I decided to test out the switchblade keyless fob.
Mazda dealer told me that it wouldnt work on my car since it is a 2004 Rx8 (first generation). That was to be expected; however, a Mazda technician assured me that it would work flawlessly... I will just need to get it cut and programmed.
My died fobs were Visteon Model 41848, FCC ID KPU41805 (see the back of your keyless fob). I ordered used one off ebay for like 30 bucks, which has FCC ID KPU41788.
I had to get the blade cut, which home depot wouldnt do it. Went to a local locksmith, and paid 6 bucks.
Total cost was about 40 bucks... and I followed the instructions on this board to the Tee and it WORKED!!! The "longest" part of this project was the drive to the local locksmith, which was a ten-minute drive... and the whole programming (remote plus the key) worked....
By the way, you will need two valid keys (including the valet key... which is has a grey-colored head on the key)... If you want to get your key cut, do it with the master key since with the master key, you can open the trunk and glove compartment.
Anyway, best of luck to others... and MANY THANKS to others for the instructions/comments/assurances!!!!
by the way, the dealer told me... everything would cost me about $215, that was the discount rate.... locksmiths in my area would cost me in range of $85 to $125 to cut AND program the key.... I spent? about 40 bucks for the same result/outcome...

Have same situation as you Random Thoughts. I wish to get a switchable key from ebay. Any one you recommend? I believe all are same kpu41788? I have a 2004 grand touring rx8 with 2 keys. Who did you use from ebay? Then as I am reading get cut at ACE or WALMART. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
I got mine from autoniz:
OEM MAZDA FLIP KEY KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE UNCUT KEY KPU41788
The most important things are... make sure that there is a warranty and a chip in the key. You can usually ask a seller. I would not recommend you to ask a seller if it would work on ur 2004/5 Rx8, because they will likely say "no" when in reality it will work as long the blade key has a chip and u have two valid keys. Finally, you want to make sure it has a trunk button also.
As for getting it cut at ACE or WALMART, you might want to call either store and ask because I have been told that Wal-Mart has changed its policy on cutting car keys. I did not verify that information as the closest Wal-Mart is about 20-25 minutes away while a local locksmith was considerably closer.
I hope that helps. LMK

Can't start Mazda rx8 04 after following D.I.Y. procedures!
Just had my new "switch blade" key/remote cut at the dealership - they did it for FREE! I then quickly programmed the new key in the ignition in like 30 seconds thanks to the D.I.Y. here. Then I programmed the remote fob (attached to the new key) in like another 45 seconds. All my keys and remotes are working with my 8. This was the easiest upgrade by far thanks to the folks who posted to/on this D.I.Y.
Thanks in advance for any help! I know these questions have been asked in forums etc on here but unfortunately I'm at a loss here.
