Transponder keys and keyless remotes
Transponder keys and keyless remotes
I think I have this straight, read lots of posts on here, so someone who knows please sanity check me.
RX8 I acquired came with only one transponder key and no keyless remotes.
From what I have read, I'm pretty sure;
I'll have to go to dealer or locksmith to get a second transponder key programmed.
I can actually program a keyless remote myself using the DIY instructions from this forum.
That sound about right?
Anyone have a good reliable source for economical transponder keys and keyless remotes?
Thanks in advance!
Eric

Unfortunately, with an 8, to replace the keyless remote key you have to go to a mazda dealer. The car will be equipped with an immobilizer that has to detect a chip embedded in the key/remote assy. and can only be programmed to match the car's security system by a dealer. An aftermarket universal remote might open the door locks, but a programmed key will still be needed to start the car. Best just spend the money once and get it done right.
I also recently purchased my RX8 and it came with 1 transponder key and 1 key fob.
After calling the dealers about getting another transponder key made and getting multiple quotes ranging up to $150 per key I decided to start simple.
Called a local locksmith, told him what I needed, met him in town with my 1 transponder key. He made me 2 more on the spot, programmed and tested to work for $100 total.
Try your local locksmith first for keys.
Key fob is another story. Dealer or aftermarket but pricey, the cheapest I have found is $85.

Has anyone had to get an advanced key replaced without an original? Is this a dealer only thing? My car didn't come with any sort of remote, just two "old fashioned" keys, and I didn't realize how many features it had till I started reading the owners manual pdf. I would like to get it replaced but even the aftermarket ones I'm finding are about $250 and I'm not sure it's worth it at that price, plus whatever it costs to program the thing.

I was given one (1) "normal" key when I bought my car. I bought:
1) A used switchblade-style fob ~ $50 (Make sure you get the correct part number!)
2) A blank transponder key insert ~ $12
And
3) Had a local locksmith cut the key a program it to start the car $35
After he programmed the key,
4) I was able to pair the remote fob myself
The remote is entirely separate from the transponder in the key insert.
