Very nice addition to the DIY section. I'm purchasing both the tool and a new fuel pump.

Nice tool find - that seems to be the weak link in my DIY!

....and a good price! The ring costs $78 if you break it!

Awesome DIY - You might want to have less than 1/4 tank of gas before removing the pump. Otherwise gas can flow out.

Wow, amazingly easy to get to. Would have done this a while back if I'd known. Tried it tonight and knocked off a bunch of tabs. Tried using bike chain around it, but it didn't have enough grip and just cut into the outside tabs a bit.
Ordered the amazon tool tonight.

Is there a trick to getting the fuel line off? The thing looks pretty delicate, and I sure as hell don't want to break it.

I didn't have a whole lot of luck with the amazon tool. It's not much more than a spanner wrench (the ring shown in the picture is the actual fuel pump retaining ring, it's not part of the tool.) It's pretty flimsy. I ended up breaking several more tabs of the ring, and then breaking the tool. I ended up cutting/breaking the ring off the pump. On top of that, it didn't seem to do anything to help my problem (engine bogging down at low revs and cutting off at high revs.)
Guess I gotta order a new ring and figure out how to leave my car at the dealer.

'04-'08 Fuel Pump is $137.98 from Jason. I wonder what the '09 fp goes for with the fixes in place?

denny is the test mule for this, but it is ~ 400 bucks. but if it works, well better than replacing one every 40k miles.

What about a new sock instead of cleaning the sock? How much does a new sock cost?

I imagine many other cars (or every other car) has some kinda filter like that. There's gotta be a compatible one out there that is sold by itself. Or do you think that all fuel socks in existence are only available with the pump? That would be the height of lamery

great post.. my only bugaboo with it.. (and not to be a smart as with the small stuff) don't use compressed air, it causes particles to penetrate the filter allowing stuff in that was meant to stay out.. just a suggestion.. oh and for the guys that are still beating the crap out of the plastic ring.. it does come off.. penetrating oil got mine off..
