I would vote for Magnum, unless your hands are very small.

I have read a lot about this shifter, and I heard something about greasing it.

When you purchase it, does it come pregreased or do you have to apply grease yourself?

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I haven't bought this yet, but after reading all the feedback this mod has gone from nowhere right to the top of my got-to-buy list.

Question

Richard,

Just a quick question.....
Are there any thoughts on a 5MT version ?
Here in Greece i am sure i can find at least 20 people that would like one..

Waiting for your reply.

Regards,
George

P.S. (if this is already answered, i apologize, but after 25 pages of reading i skipped to the last one.)

We have thought about it and we have several inquires from EU and Japan. The trouble is that we don't have access to a car with which we can engineer the parts. We have seen pictures of them and they look more like the Rx7 style but the FD unit we made several years ago doesn't fit.
You might contact Hymee Enhanced EU via Fabrice who can be found on this forum. If he has enough demand then maybe we can at least get a gearbox over here to work off of.

First of all I wish a Happy and Healthy New Year to everyone.
Thank you for your reply, Paul.
As for the Shifter, would it help if i send you an original 5MT shifter?
I have very good connections with Mazda here in Greece, and i might be able to get hold of one...

Regards,
George

Thumbs up

I just ordered my RP SS this morning! RP, personally, responded very quickly and said I'd have it by Monday-Tuesday! I've ordered stuff "2nd Day Express" before and it hasn't moved that quickly. I'm very impressed and will be using the DIY. My only question is, on the DIY it doesn't state clearly how to remove the white bolts that hold the wires with the flat-head? I'm a spaz and usually end up scratching things when I don't know exactly what to do...Please help, anyone? PM me or post how to remove the s'cewey white bolts?

I'll post my impressions when it is installed. I can't wait...(tee hee)...I feel like I'm 4 and am waiting for Santa...

I have had the shifter for about three months with no issues. Lately I notice that first gear requires more force than normal. The extra force is required not when I’m stopped but when I’m rolling. What can the issue be? I recently changed the transmission fluid but all other gears feel great. Any ideas?

I also started a thread on this, want to get as much responce as possible.

I have the RP Short shifter as well and have had it in the car for three or four months. I like it much better then the original. Latley thought I have been having a harder time shifting as well. It was grinding a bit even with the clutch all the way to the floor. Well I am in the process of installing a stainless clutch hose, and the first thing I did was install a SpeedBleader and then flushed the clutch line, the original one mind you I havent installed the new one yet. As soon as I did that the clutch is performing just like new. I think there was air in the line from the beginning. You might want to try bleading the clutch line and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info, I actually just got my agency brake lines and clutch line today. Its not a grinding sound it just feels as though it hits a stop then I have push harder. It only does it in first ?

I've noticed the same thing, but I'm not sure if it's due to the change in Transmission oil as well. I've only been running the short shifter for about a month so far, and I did the Redline Tranny Oil Swap about a week after the install. 3-4 shifts seems a little notchy as well, but the rest is butter...

Its strange I don't understand why its only first gear and only when its rolling a bit. Maybe I'll try to see if its low on fluid, I might just pull the fill plug and fill again until it dribbles out.

mine seems to be grinding on the 1st-2nd shift. its not the gears that are grinding, but sounds like something a little higher up, and not made of metal, i dont know if its bad or not. has anyone had this?

Is the RP shortshifter the same, or similar to the Axial flow ss?

The problom I am having is not a grinding noise, it just requires more force to pop it into 1st.

Try this...slow down to under 10mph. Then try it. If it goes in easier at slower speeds, its not the shifter. I'm pretty sure that that is how our tranny is set up though...

Hoo'ah.

The issue is that at slow speeds, I mean b/w 3 & 10 I have put lots of force to get it to pop into 1st. It won't make a grinding sound, I push it stops then I have to push a little harder then pop it goes in. Weird if you ask me.

The problem with the first gear on the RX-8 is that the ratio of first is a long ways from 2nd than the rest. The other gears are what we consider a close ratio, meaning there is less RPM difference between the adjacent gears. But because our engine has very little low end torque Mazda has installed a lower 1st gear.
Therefore, think of it as a starting gear not a driving gear.

If you want to prove this to yourself try double-clutching it into 1st using a lot of rev's.

i thought it was normal that you have to use more force to get it back into first when moving.

i dont like putting it into first unless im going slower than 9 mph anyways...
