As for nitrous.. it's not 40% O2, it's 100% N2O - the heat of combustion breaks apart the N2O molecule and frees up nitrogen and oxygen. N2O itself is pretty much inert at ambient temps.
The biggest danger with using nitrous on the street (besides the go really fast factor) is that the bottle is pressurized to like 1000psi... If the emergency valve were to fail for any reason, and the bottle overheats, that would be a very large boom (I saw pics once of a half a car and a quarter of the garage... gone). This is however a very rare occurrence and requires a large amount of user error... One could argue it's more of Darwinism at work.
A more efficient way of using pure O2 would be to strap a couple booster rockets to the back of your car. The results would be quite similar, though....

^ it was for my bio class, although I throughroughly enjoyed watching small rodents bleed to death........
and yes, most dangers involving nitrous can be avoided by being very very careful.........
most of the explosions and stuff you see is mostly user error, unless ofcourse you get a defective valve of some sort...........which is why there is a shitload of equipment like safety blow down tube, purge kits, etc etc to make sure u don't blow up ur car...............
but then again, NOS is gonna blow up ur car right? don't tell me otherwise.........blah blah...........I'll let CRH deal with that XD

As stolen from Wikipedia:
When nitrous oxide decomposes, a single mole will release 1/3 mole of oxygen gas, allowing an oxygen saturation of 33% to be reached.

About 25 years ago a Hot Rod/Tire store in Durham NC caught on fire. Sitting on top of drum of race fuel were a few Nitrous bottles. They didn't ignite but the heat had swollen the fuel barrel and the Nitrous was purging from the overpressure valve. A fireman hosed down the barrel and grabbed the nitrous bottles and tossed them outside. He was interviewed later on the news and said it was the dumbest thing he ever did. He should have just let the building burn.

how about u just use natural air compressed at about 15pounds of boost into your engine? its about 20% O2 anyways
oh wait! thats what a turbo/supercharger does!
how stupid of me

Nitro vs Nitrous
N2O is illegal here in cyprus. The only time they allow to refill the bottles is when there is an official Drag race and you must have prove that you actually race to be able to refill the bottle.I mean is ok to buy the kit but without be able to refill the bottle is useless. As i said a few locals here refill it with oxygen but i dont know if they use the same amount of spray like nitro. They actually say that the results are about the same as nitro.I will ask them and keep you inform how they do it.
Um, I hope this is a mis-type:
Nitro- as in Nitroglycerin / C3H5(NO3)3 Explosive used to make things go boom, BIG boom.
Homeland Security would not like you for trying to run this in in your car.(Especially near government buildings)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitroglycerin
Nitro- as in Nitro-Methane / CH3NO2 Top Fuel NHRA = Illegal on the street; special handling and a gas mask required!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitromethane
Nitrous- As in Nitrous-Oxide / N2O Dentists use it, welders use it, this is the go fast gas you should fill the "Nitrous kit" with.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrous_oxide
I am not surprised you were told "Nitro is illegal"; the first example is much more illegal than the second
ASK FOR NITROUS
I hope you did not need this, and were using Nitrous.

The Professor
Molecular Weights (amu)
Nitrogen: 14.0067
Oxygen: 15.9994
Nitrous oxide=(14.0067x2)+15.9994 = 44.0128 = one mole of nitrous oxide
So, when nitrous oxide deteriorates, it would decompose to = 15.9994/44.0128 = 36.4% by weight.
Since mass can neither be created nor destroyed, I'm not too sure how the number 33% is reached.
