I'm not buying this bit about the Mazdaspeed turbo kit upgrade. I MAY buy the idea of a Mazdaspeed turbo version or supercharged version...I certainly hope it happens. But to make it in kit form so you can just slap it on the older cars? No way. I can't imagine them making a turbo REnesis but not changing compression or anything else internal to the engine...and I don't see them offering a kit with new rotors that requires a rebuild to install it!

I don't see why everyone has a hard time beliving that since an engine has high compression that it can't be boosted. Anything can be turbocharged, it's just a matter of tuning. Drop in a set of colder spark plugs pull a bit of timing add some fuel and it can be done. It does require more attention to temp variances but it can and has been done.

Your not going to run 20 psi of boost with 10:1 compression unless the car is only going to be used for track duty with C-16 or better gas.

True there is a point of diminishing returns, but that works both ways, the more compression you take away the more boost you have to run to make power, conversly the more compression that is added the less boost you can safely run on regular gas.

I don't know about everybody else, but since you quoted my post...

I never said a high-compression motor couldn't be boosted. I said I wasn't buying the story in this thread that Mazdaspeed was coming out with a turbo version of the RX-8 and providing the turbo stuff as a kit that could be retrofitted onto the older cars. Think of it this way...if you're going to make a fully-warranted, stock turbo RX-8, you're going to do it right...right? You're going to lower the compression, probably modify the intake setup (more like the lower power motor) etc...just like Mazda has done every other time they've offered a turbo rotary. So, if they do that....how could they possibly offer that as a kit? Answer: They couldn't, and they wouldn't. It sounds way too much like what we all want to hear, and way too little like anything that has happened before or could conceivably happen in the future.

ANy thoughts on the aftermarket Mazda speed turbo vs. having it installed at the factory? seem like if all is equal- the insurance savings by turboing aftermarket would pay for the tubo kit...

 

Mario, I was not intending my comment to be directed at you. My apologies. What I meant to express was that the person who spoke to "a dealership" and was told that a Mazdaspeed turbo kit was on the way was probably told that by a salesman. And, in my experience, not all sales people have good, accurate info - especially about yet-to-be-released products. Further, some will say what they think the customer wants to hear to make the sale.

Again, I am not saying that all salespeople are like this, and it certainly doesn't sound like you are. All I (and most of us, I suspect) would like is some reliable info on whether Mazdaspeed is coming out with some sort of a retrofitable FI kit. I'd LOVE to bolt FI onto my car, but won't do so at the expense of the warranty, so a Mazdaspeed kit would be nirvana.

mazdaspeed parts are already available online......the only thing that would make me happy for having mazdaspeed parts available at my dealer is the convenience of being able to pick them up myself, and ONLY if there prices are cheaper than those online, which i am not sure mazda can offer from their dealership sites.

 

Unless you have a buddy or relative who works for the dealer and gets the 40% parts discount.

but can't you take the word of a fellow RX-8 enthusiust?

 

The parts online from mazda will be a "retail" price...... plus shipping, at a dealer, it will also be a retail price, whatever the dealer sets it at, with no shipping. It may be a draw depending on how much the dealer marks the parts up from wholesale prices.
BTW- once I know a ETA or when I can place orders, I'll let you all know....... but get on the ball right away....most accesories and parts for the RX-8 are on backorder

 

unless the parts will be significantly cheaper then the highway robbery rates that are out there currently, I'm not getting excited over a $1000 exhaust or $1500 wing...

Those are the Mazdaspeed wheels. The one on the car is the magnesium one and each rim is $1350. The good news is that they do offer the aluminum one as well and the price is $660 each. The size is 18x8 for both the front and back. The center cap is $35 each. We can import them from Japan if you would like. Thank you.

Mario, if you were replying to me, and are saying that you've seen a brochure from Mazda that says they are coming out with a retrofitable FI kit, then I am ***PSYCHED***. Can you clarify?

 

The silence is not a great indication of when the kit will be available.

 

About an upgrade for current 8's, it would probably work like so:

You take your 8 and your deep pockets to the dealership, you pay to get the turbo, labor, and whatever parts will be taken out and replaced.
I'm not that familiar with the renesis, but most engines aim for a lower compression ratio for FI applications... but although 10:1 is not "optimal", it is doable. Still think they will fiddle with compression though... I would.

Did Mazda offer a turbo retrofit kit for '86 RX-7s when the Turbo II came out the next year? I don't believe they did. I think any discussion of it happening now for the RX-8 is just wishful thinking. I hope I'm wrong of course!
