Exclamation Greddy/Trust Turbo...Good/Bad News

I as many of the rest of you have been anxiously awaiting forced induction have been jittery so i have contacted a few places without much response except for Greddy. I ask them about the turbo kit for the RX-8 and this is what they said:

Thanks for your interest in GReddy Products.
Trust does offer a turbo kit for the Japanese spec model, but currently we do not have an application that will work with the USA spec RX8. We are still unsure if we will make one available for the USA spec car yet, but we are working on it now.
Please check back with our website www.greddy.com for updates or contact an
authorized GReddy Dealer.

I don't understand why turbocharging a U.S. spec 8 would be so much different from a J-spec 8 ???

It isn't so much different - it's just a teensy bit different, in the most critical area of all - fuel management. If Greddy has a piggyback system to handle fuel and timing, and that system is tuned for the J-spec ECU tune, then they need to re-tune it for the North American ECU tune. Without that re-tune, their system would run like crap and possibly blow up your motor.

Regards,
Gordon

OK, I understand what you are saying Gordon, but I still don't understand why it is so hard to re-tune for the U.S. spec ECU?

It may not be that it's hard, it may just be something they don't want to do yet, as unreasonable as it seems.

bah. the answer is not too hard. you just need to do an ECU retuning ala RB. That's the was JDM tuners are doing it... no piggybacks. They are overwriting the ECU maps.

I am no turbo expert, so I ask those whom are... is it that sensitive? The "JDM tune" is probably essentially the same as the US tune. As such, what's the big deal?!

Agreed. Perhaps they plumbed it in such a way that it only fits on a RHD car? If so, that would explain the delay...

its more about US emmision laws. inorder for them to retune they have to get the ok to make a tune that is US emmision legal .. or they cant import it

so that cost big bucks, if they think there a big demmand for it theyll make it happen.. so we all need to write them once a week and tell them we want there kit !!!

thew has the right idea... email and call Greddy at least once a week telling them that you want that turbo kit in the US. That'll get their attention! :D

I just spoke to Charles at Greddy over the phone and he says that they don't even have a US prototype turbo made. He has no clue when it will even be made. He couldn't comment further on any R&D details.

Also the CARB certification is a pain in the butt, and very expensive.

Well that just killed my motivations to save money this summer. I've been saving money for the Trust/Greddy turbo in hopes that it will be available this fall. Well I guess I'll just buy some rims and a body kit.

My guess is that IF we even see a Greddy kit, it won't be till at least the middle of next year. Till then I'll just keep on modding the other areas of the 8 and keep my fingers crossed.
