Fix the stock ECU mapping?

I am not sure what the whole deal is with the ECU, but I heard that it was detuned to meet emissions. I have a friend who drove a pre-production RX-8 and he says the production version lost its *****. It is in fact why he bought a corvette instead.
Is there away to reflash the ECU with the more powerful mappings? or this what eManage does? Sorry I am not to knowledgeable about the options we have with our ECU.

Or you could always go an alternative route and go with RE for ecu flash
