Decided I need a catch can

While swapping out my stock intake to the K&N I noticed I had the infamous oil in my intake problem, and there was a LOT of oil. It had actually pooled up in the stock intake box! At that moment I knew a catch can was needed.

After doing research the only one I could find that was specifically designed for the RX-8 was the Weapon R catch can. I know a universal catch can would work but I did not feel like sourcing out a location to mount it and make a custom mount for it so I went the Weapon R for ease of mind. This is what it looks like:

Now, I'm not big on bling. I hate shiny parts in my engine bay so I knew up front something had to be done about this thing. When I got it I disassembled it, removed the Weapon R logo, and sent it off to a friend to get it powdercoated. I received it back today. Here's what it now looks like:

MUCH better. I'm going to install it this weekend. The plan is to use black hoses instead of the clear ones Weapon R includes with the kit. I want this thing to blend in with the engine bay so I'm going all out. The plan is to route the oil to this can and then install a breather filter to it. What I'm not sure of right now is whether I'm going to just hook the breather filter up to the catch can itself or use some more hose and route the filter to a location where it's not as visible to the naked eye. I think I'll probably go that route. I'm also thinking about painting the gold bolts black to keep the same theme going.

Once installed this weekend I'll post up some more pictures of it.

Well, put it in this thread when done as it's probably the single best thread for catch cans. Might have helped you out before buying this one, but oh well.

Little boxy and ugly for my tastes. Have to see how big it really is when installed.

I don't find any of them to be attractive, but that doesn't really matter as I'm not going for show. I like the size of it. I like that because it means I don't have to check the damn thing for a long, long time. lol

How and where's it mount?

Yeah, you're right.........most important is to get the oil out of the intake!

It mounts in the passenger side strut tower/air pump area. Utilizes stock components and bolts to do it I do believe.

I say I do believe because Weapon R didn't even bother to send instructions with it.

I finally installed it today. There are no instructions from Weapon R, all they were able to do was provide me some pictures of it. Luckily enough anyone with common sense can figure out where to install this thing so it was easy!

I didn't like the clear hose Weapon R provided so I went to a parts store and ordered some hose that was a little too small to install. I did this on purpose. Why? It was a bitch to get them on there but it eliminated the need for clamps which look pretty ugly in an engine bay IMO. It took some force but they went on, they aren't stretching to dangerous levels (barely any stretch at all in fact), and better yet they are NOT coming off without some force.

I decided against a breather filter because the only ones the shops had locally were all too big, not to mention they were ugly colors like blue and red. Because of this I decided to use some extra hose and route it back to the intake. If for some reason this ends up sucking oil into the intake then I'll address that when the situation comes up. I think this catch can is big enough that that won't happen.

Before you ask I do not know what size the hose is. I just compared sizes and picked this one out. I did not ask what size it was. My apologies!

Anyways, onto the pictures:

Nice and stealthy, just like I want it!

Here you can see how I routed the hoses. I over-sized the one going back to the intake just a little so I could route it under the strut tower bar and use zip-ties to keep it in place. You can see it, but it's not as bad as it could have been.

Close up of the catch can itself. It had a Weapon R emblem on the top of it but I removed it. It was only held on by tape so it just took a little time convincing it with a razor blade to come off.

Here you can see how and where I zip-tied it.

I'll post these up in the other thread but I figured I'd leave a reply in here as well in case people were watching it.

That's the same catch can I installed last week. I used an air breather though (bought off Amazon) and their hoses since they're a tight fit already as it is, with the hose clamps. I like the looks of it as it is, maybe because I left mine chrome perhaps.

It too me awhile to even find where the can was it blends in with your washer bottle nicely because you have the black bottle.

Hands down best looking catch can IMHO.
How much did you pick it up for?

The rest stick out like it's just not meant to be.
As if a "bling" catch can makes your engine bay that much better.

Thank you! Thanks for all of the kind words everyone!

It was around $80 shipped I think? I bought it from here:

http://www.jscspeed.com/catalog/Mazd...azda_RX_8.html

The hoses ran around $4-$5.

Powdercoating was free as a friend of mine was wanting stuff to coat at the time. lol

All said and done it was still less than the GReddy can and this one was built specifically for the RX-8. Not a bad deal at all if you ask me.

Right, it looks good in your engine bay KrumbZ because you have other polished items.

But for most on a near stock setup I'd rock the flat black stealth mode.
