cracking the ecu....

If MazdaEdit can already log and flash then the answer is already there, there is no point in trying to do anything else unless your wanting to get software for free and share it among others for free, as it is MazdaEdit is reasonable priced at $150 so long as it works however!
Has anyone tested it?

Yea, I think I emailed him, but he never got back with me... I may have to poke him again. I did get a response from the openPort guys. They're passing on my offer to work on a mobile(arm)/x86 linux driver to the owner supposedly... not sure how much I believe them, but it would be nice.

The main plus I see with the AP is the ability to change premade maps on the go. But if I recall, customizing your own maps are expensive, aren't they? Maybe I am off, but isn't the AP about 800 plus another 1500 for the tuning software?

for 2004 - 2008 USD manual cars (not sure about auto trans) it's just the cost of the Cobb AP ($495 new, $300 - $400 used) and the Racetuner software is free. The Pro software that allows tuning and locking programs for resale on multi vehicles was about $1500 or so, but it seems that this option may have been bought out by MazdaManiac since he claims to be the sole distributor of the Cobb AP for the RX-8 now. Only more reason to now get this out on open access.

I agree Team... it should be easier to tune cars, or to get the tools to access the ECU. Personally I think that you should be able to get everything you need for around $100 tops. Software, and an OBD2 dongle. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use smart phones in the same capacity as the access port.

So, you are admitting at this point that it is just about some sort of weird campaign on your part?
The AP with the Race Tuner is still the least expensive, easiest to use and most comprehensive of the tuning options.
When it looked like the AccessPORT was going away, I invested in all the available options (MazdaEdit, Harrison, etc.) and even at my experience level the amount of work to get a viable calibration with those packages was daunting. Hymee's software is really the best alternative if an AP with Race Tuner is not palatable to some.

There are people to help figure the maps out if you need help. It's not as hard as you might think, but it does require a bit more thought than, point, click, pay at this window. Chances are, if you have an 04 or 05 those definitions are already done and subsequent years only get easier to figure out!

Lets see the map'd car's results over a stock motor before even going down this route?

So I ask you, what have you ever done for me and what have I ever done for you? Not that it matters. I never asked for or needed anything from you, but I gave willingly to help you out just the same. I don't feel any differently now on a personal level. However, WRT your vendor status I still strongly believe you need to put all the lame BS excuses to bed and get these kits completed and to their rightful owners asap. As I consider you a friend and always have I make no bones about speaking honestly to you. I may be wrong in doing so at times and am always open to considering that I am wrong. If you honestly believe I have a campaign against you, dislike you on a personal level, or whatever else then you are wrong.
I am as equally open about going hand to hand with you on the forum as I am open to going heart to heart with you off the forum if you would rather discuss it there instead.

Totally agree that having more options in the tool box is for the better. any of us, that have been pursuing options for tuning from the get go, i believe would rather have more than one option available.

If that allows tuning of all your maps and float values that doesn't sound like too bad of a deal at 500 and no extra work, it would have saved me quite a few hours of hunting maps.
Also, someone mentions gains... Well nobody would be tuning if the potential for gains weren't there, so I guess the gains are gonna be dependent on your setup and quality of tune. Personally, I've reduced the slight stumble on the APV opening and increased the torque in the overly rich stock upper rpm range as well as raised my average MPG among other things that add to my driving pleasure.
Also, I kept looking for the Hymee setup in the past but it wasn't out yet, is it out now? Price?
Personally I was hoping for more support and involvement with open source information as well as a tuning community of sharing and research and development, this thread is label ecu cracking isn't it?
Which maps are people tuning? I ask because they may be maps that are already known and/or easy to locate.
I am not a programmer or have any affiliation with the industry but I would gladly help out anyone who is interested as I am in tuning there car with non-monopolized tools in a collaborative effort.
And, I am not sure what's not intuitive about tuning the RX... can you elaborate MM?

Back to cracking the ECU
Any one have any values or addresses on the a couple of items of interest:
Detonation Thresholds
Retard Tables
Idle Timing
DBW Tables
Thanks
Anyone able to add launch control or no-lift-shift yet?

I apologize, maybe I should have offered directly, in a community of RX8 owners, I as well as others (I hope) would gladly help you work out those maps for you if you decide to go down that road.
As far as the friendly interface, I like RomRaider. It runs in java, has color variation of values, 3-D displays, and the ease of definition building, and a large community of users, which is fine for me, but there are several other software packages to choose from for tuning to suit your own taste.

Kinda .....
Managed to tune throttle maps (in my turbo 8)such that I can just push pedal to the floor 1st and 2nd gear and get max. acceleration with nil wheelspin.
Not really a big deal unless you run more than about 7psi of boost but it makes a huge difference to launching if you are running 10-11 .

Yeah, android would be ideal anyway (i have my aria running torque set up in the car all the time anyway), but even still, editing maps on a PC would be way easier than a small touchscreen. Modify the map, push it to phone, push it to ecu. Word.
edit: Ubuntu One for easy pushing! TO THE CLOUD! (works on windows and linux, android, iphone, and i think blackberry)
