Does anyone else wonder why MazdaSpeed does not make an intake?

I have the NEW K&N Typhoon,


Idled better then stock, better throttle response, and THE SOUND. Man, it was an awesome buy.

I reccoment the new K&N to everyone, Im guessing they got most of their design from racing beat, as they developed the REVi with K&N.


If you looking for a sweet look in engine bay (Carbon Fibre, & Black anodized plumbing) and a gutteral grown that gets LOUD at WOT, this is the one for you.

Note: Ive noticed a slight improvement in MPG as well.

Has Mazdaspeed ever made an intake? For anything? Its an honest question, as I don't know the answer, but I've never seen or heard of one. The may have had a Mazdaspeed-branded filter but I don't remember who made it for them.

No they have not and you would think they would want to or least rebrand somthing, they are missing out on hard earned dollars

Mazdaspeed was started to create parts for the teams factory race cars, they also sell some of those parts over the counter, to weekend racers and enthusiets, lots of the parts are actualy made by outside companys and re-branded for sale. Mazdaspeed doesnt ever go overboard with its improvents, and always aims for improving response and handling over just giving more power, look at the mazdaspeed miata/protege, not a huge jump in power, but overall the car was a nice improvment. The dont make an intake for the rx8 cause it doesnt need one, anyone that has swaped intakes can tell you, the improvments, even with the revi, are hardly mind blowing. I dont think its worth mazdas time/money to come out with an intake that would only apeale to some of the owners and only give minior power increases.

Dont get me wrong, I plan to get a revi of my own, for the small increase in power, but more for the sound and response.

I have to agree w/ 10krpms, I have the revi and Ram Air. I love how it has changed the sound of the car. I also love getting 2.27 MPG more, If you do the math it will take 3 1/2 years to get a ROI. And i love that the intake does clean up response and idle. These little things make me feel good about the intake, and I am glad I bought it.

I think an intake is useless besides noise. I think you would be better off just getting the ram air setup.

That description fails to explain the Mazdaspeed cat-back exhaust (no claims of any power gain, although there may be something extremely minimal), the faux carbon fiber interior bits, the allegedly real carbon fiber exterior trim, etc. In many of these cases, they've gone away from the old Mazda Competition philosophy (which closely matched what you describe). Given their cat-back, I really don't see why the RX-8 would "need" an intake any less.

very true, the interior parts kinda sliped my mind. oops :o

while the exhaust might not make any more power, it does produce less backpressure than the stock system, and might make more of a change on the cars equipt with the JDM emissions system (I belive its a differnt setup as far as the cat and all goes, I could be wrong though...?)

Obviously if they hope to sell a car, they have to make it appeal to the target buyer....so the CF accents and stuff help them with that IMO.


I was just talking more about parts you would define as 'performance' parts, you will see mazdaspeed sells :
Flywheel
Cat Back
Air Filter
Brake Pads
Light-weight Wheels
Coil Over
Sway Bars
Aero-Package (body kit)
Strut-Tower Ties
Frame Braces
Stainless Steel Brake lines
Ect....

Those are the parts I think of a 'Mazdaspeed' the other parts such as the accent parts, seats, ect are branded mazdaspeed cause they are included on the Mazdaspeed Model cars. I guess I just like to think im spending so much money on the parts cause they are the best for the car....lol :D

I think mazdaspeed died a few years ago, and was replaced by "lets put our name on stuff to make extra money"speed. A large number of parts aren't designed or created for their cars at all...just repainted and labeled aftermarket parts from other companies. Some of these parts are completely identical, while others have slight adjustments...sometimes I think they don't even test fit some of the products...

There seems to be some sort of massive internal conflict at mazda over their cars, direction, and parts.

Like heads of a hydra fighting over decisions which effect the entire lineup. Sometimes they start to do something incredible...then suddenly pull back, and release something "good" but not life changing.

I'm hoping that their continued financial success doesn't force them into becoming another clone, and instead further seperates their lineup from the rest of the boring mediocracy on the market.

I have the Ram air duct connected to the stock box. I cut the vfad unit in order to have the duct be sealed to the stock box. We checked intake air temperture using the CanScan unit after driving 100 miles. Outside temperature was between 85-90 degrees Farenhiet. Intake temperature was 30 degrees Farenhiet cooler than the stock 8 on the same day same drive. I have heard that every 10 degrees cooler for the intake air it gives 1-2 HP. It makes the biggest difference on a hot day.

I should also mention I have the OEM drop in K&N filter.

That's interesting, 30 degrees less...

My response to getting a new intake is whether you are planning on staying NA or going to FI. At some point, probably next summer, I'll be going to FI and I'm fairly positive all air intake tracts will all be replaced so it makes little sense for me to spend the $300-400. But if you're plannig on staying NA, the argument could be made between the increased mpg, better idle, and slight gain in power that it is well worth the investment over time.
