this MIGHT be a stupid, or annoying question, but hear me out. i want to get the act prolight flywheel and i know i SHOULD get a new clutch at the same time to save on the installation costs down the line. this basically doubles the price though...my question is with regard to everyone's personal experiences with clutch wear (on your rx8 or any other car for that matter). i had a civic before this and was around 60,000 miles when i sold it with no clutch replacement. i'm around 40,000 now in my rx8. so, is there any way to check clutch wear visibly or is just when you feel is slipping or does is just go out one day? i've heard of clutches lasting over 100,000 miles so i'd hate to buy a new one if i don't need to. for those that have purchased an aftermarket flywheel, did you choose to get a clutch at the same time? thanks in advance for any advice.

You're right, buying both at the same time and having them installed, will save you a couple bucks.
Clutches just don't go out, unless you been riding on it for a couple miles. If you pay attention to your driving habits, and the feel of the clutch, you can tell when it is slipping.

Small incremental cost (relative to to total) to go ahead a replace the clutch. Even if it has some wear left, most of the cost is in the labor to take it all apart, unless you can do it all yourself.

This will give you a chance to upgrade get a better clutch at the same time.

thanks guys. if i were to get the act prolight from dpe, is their packaged clutch/flywheel a good buy or do you have recommend a particular clutch?

I just got my car back with the same combo. It revs a good deal quicker and the gears engage very smoothly. The pedal effort is not bad at all. I actually prefer the new clutch to OEM, though by my recollection the OEM was pretty mushy. Highly recommended.

According to my research, unless you're planning some high HP upgrades, make sure you go with the Heavy Duty clutch and not the Extreme Duty.
