Installed mine today. Or tried anyway. Can't select reverse now

Followed the DYI, but not exactly a mechanic, so I spent some over an hour, most of the time getting the console off and the damn wire holders off the 10mm thingys :P Can probably do it in 10 now though, which is good since I'm gonna have to take it off. What do I do now though? I only tested it briefly when I had it all open, must have got 6th and thought I selected reverse. It fitted so snugly into the gearbox that I didn't even think that there'd be a problem.

Anyone know? If not I guess I'll search in older threads. Loved the feel of it.

Didn't give it a slap, but once I had started the car I tried to push it firmly down and over a few times. But it probably hits the lockout cover. Will have to take it up to see how much if that is the case. I mean, how hard would you do it compared to stock? Think I tried as firmly as I considered viable.

I have an '09 shifter here that we are looking at. Problem being that we aren't sure how many more 8's they are going to make, Mazda isn't pushing them very hard, they just wanna sell 3's.
Who else is making them, I'd like to check them out.
I did get one and it was junk as you said.

The only way Mazda is going to make the 8 into a big seller is if they make it fast.
The only way to do that is to make the 1.8 engine.
With gas back down they should bring it out.
So they lose a mile to the gallon, who cares.

If it will not go into reverse you need to dremel or even file a very small amount from the top of the lockout tab. You might even just have to put a small champher on the edge to get it started. Your car is one that is at the end of Mazda tolorence. We are only talking about .25mm or .010in. Maybe less. No need to force it, just get the clearance right.
Sorry your a little to far away for me to do it for you.

Let me know if you can't get it.

I wasn't expecting you to come over and fix it, no

Thanks for the tip though. I've got a dremel, however I'm not sure if the very basic attachments I got are able to do anything to metal. But I can try very careful and see. I take it you mean I should start on the upper part of the edge since you mention champher.

You have the right idea. It is a small amount, you can even use a little file.

Ferg, well then I guess you will get it tomorrow. They say 2-3 days, but not a sure thing.

this is what i was looking at

http://www.miatamania.com/Shop/ViewP...eIndexID=59694

the complaint from the MX-5 people is that it goes into reverse due to a weak spring.
the other way to go is with japanparts.com about $450. i believe that is a mazda speed shifter.

i would pay that i if i had to.

i know it has to be viable businesses option for you

I don't like that the reverse is where the 6th gear is at all to be honest. Prefer the VW way where it was lift up and upper left (1st gear spot). As whenever you go into first gear you are standing still anyway.

Kinda afraid to push down by mistake and get reverse when going for 6th

Hope my problem is easy to fix though, gonna pull out the trusted dremel tomorrow

This is a very temporary situation. I would not make any purchasing decisions based on the notion that gas will remain cheap. Not going to happen.

Thanks for the quick tips RP.

Did it today, took it all up really quick the second time, and dremelled just a bit of the edge, now I can slam it into reverse, have to be firm, but that's just good.

Loving the short-shifter like everyone else. Much more confident on 1st to 2nd especially

You can't "fall for it" because there is a 30 day return policy.
On top of that there are only 2 left right now and there will be people soon that
will fight you for it.
We are getting material in on Monday to start a new batch but it takes time to machine all the parts.
when is the ETA on when you will have more available? I'm interested in picking up my 2nd one

Got it on Friday and installed it over the weekend. My first self-performed mod and I learned a lot about my car, like how it's easy for little pieces to fall into cracks and make you spend an extended amount of time trying to fish it out.

The actual short shifter itself is awesome. All RX8's should have this out of the factory. WOW!
