The Evolution Performance Driving School set to debut a new Solo Event Format for the 2012 Season The Evolution Super Shootout

The Evolution Performance Driving School, the number one name in driver’s education since 1993 is set to debut a new solo event format for 2012, the Evolution Super Shootout. This two-day event is a hybrid between SCCA’s National Tour and Pro Solo formats, and takes a portion of each entry and places it into a prize fund to be distributed to the top 10% of the Sunday Super Shootout winners. This format has Howard Duncan VP SCCA Rally/Solo very excited about the possibilities, and we at Evolution look at this as a great opportunity to build the sport, by providing this stepping stone to SCCA National Level Solo.

The Evolution Super Shootout features a four run event where all class winners and 32 of the 64 Super Shootout qualifiers are determined. These top 32 qualifiers are determined from the events overall PAX results, and are then locked into their positions for the Sunday Super Shootout. Once these folks are locked in, the rest of the competitors get a second chance at the Super Shootout with our Last Chance Qualifier. The LCQ allows these remaining competitors two runs to try and position their self into the top 48 positions in the PAX. Following the LCQ the top four ladies class competitors are brought into the Super Shootout bringing the total number thus far to 52. The remaining 12 Super Shootout positions will be from a random drawing of any that have not made the top 52 spots, bringing the total to 64.

With the Super Shootout field complete, we break the 64 competitors into a four bracket system, with the top 4 qualifiers taking the number one seed in each bracket. The first round of each bracket will allow one warm up run before the money rounds start. The Super Shootout will also run on a PAX system where each pairing will run heads up with the winner advancing to the next round, and the winners of each bracket running for the top spot worth over $2,500 in cash and prizes.

The following is a tentative schedule for the Evolution Super Shootouts:
April 21-22 ZMax Dragway Concord, NC TSCC CCRSCCA
May 5-6 Atlanta Motor Speedway Hampton, GA Atlanta Region SCCA
June 30-July 1 Dover International Raceway Dover, DE Philly SCCA
Additional Date(s) TBA
Look for more information in the coming weeks at www.evoschool.com as well as www.facebook.com/evolution. We look forward to see you all on course!

Should have looked here first about the evo shootout, although some of us still drive the v.8 wankel in classes other than STX.

oops, guess the people with Mazdaspeed bodywork will not be happy, per the latest Fastrack tech bulletin only the factory appearance kit items are legal bodywork mods:

12. ST: Per the STAC, add the following to 14.2.F.2: “This does not allow for parts sold through the manufacturer’s performance division catalog (e.g. Ford Performance, Mopar Performance, Nismo, TRD, Mazdaspeed, HPD, Mugen, SPT, etc.)” (#5200)

I guess this means TopGear8 will be driving somebody else's car and probably in a different class, big surprise ...

Glad I didn't buy any ...

That really sucks about the Mazdaspeed kit being illegal in STX

So my car that is stock except for a stage 1 clutch and a K&N panel filter is basically running against race prepped cars because of the body kit. What is the next legal class after BSP? SM

Looks like the BHR ignition kit is in again:

5. Stock: The following clarification has been recommended by the SAC and approved by the SEB: Add to the end of 13.9.A (after capacitor and before the parenthetic phrase): “Substitution or addition of ignition coil mounting brackets is permitted, provided they affix to the factory location and serve no other purpose.” (#6297, 6311)

It was regardless because the previous memo was a rule change disguised as a clarification which is itself a violation of the rules

which just goes to show that opinions stated in Fastrack are only that. If it ever goes to Protest or Appeal a completely different opinion can be rendered.

I dunno, my faith in the system is at an all time low lately

yes, and there should also be a specific BSP thread, probably a new STX thread wouldn't hurt either

Its not just your body kit, no upgraded clutch in STX either I believe. If you are not competing on the national level please remember this nugget:

Regions offer competition for all vehicles which are Nationally classed.
So petition your region to allow body kits and wings in STX, but you may be SOL on the clutch.
And yes its SM for you nationally. Maybe a GB for turbo kits for all of the orphaned STX RX8's?

it's not an upgrade, it is equivalent to the OE clutch which is permitted by the Stock class rules

I assume you mean this:

etc.) may be used provided they are essentially identical to the standard
parts
(e.g. have the same type, size, hardness, weight, material etc.),
are used in the same location, and provide no performance benefit. The
allowance for use of such replacements does not include camshafts,
differential covers, or ring-and-pinion sets, nor does it authorize the use
of piston rings having different configurations (e.g. “Total Seal”) from
those of the original.
Bolding is my emphasis. Full disclosure. I am not very well versed in clutches. For example - The Exedy stock replacement and Stage 1 are differentiated due to higher clamp loads (+25%) for the Stage 1 over stock. Strict interpretation IMO, with clamping loads increased then then Stage 1 clutch is not identical to standard. But is there any performance benefit to the Stage 1 clutch? Which probably makes the upgrade moot. Not stirring the pot just interested in you opinion or experience.

Did you actually measure it? Try it and see.

If they take a racing clutch and say it is equal to the factory unit is it then legal? The obvious answer is no. My point being, marketing literature is only that and has little value in a protest situation. Only the actual specifics matter.

That said, as a serious National level competitor I only use the factory clutch despite the higher cost just to make sure there is no question about authenticity. For most general autox competitors anything reasonably close to OE should be sufficient to meet intent as the likelihood of a protest is nada. If I were prtesting someone in an RX8 for the clutch I wouldn't even care about the clamping loading even if was 100% more than OE. I'd be looking for weight/inertia improvements like an aluminum PP, aluminum flywheel, etc. It's not like you can overpower an OE clutch, so any better clamping load is meaningless. Or at least I never did, not even launching at 8500+ rpm on 295 Hoosier A6 tires.

Understood that clamping load is not the magic bullet and that there probably is not any performance advantage.

Thanks for the great info guys. Currently I race locally but my goals is to compete nationally.

What are the chance that they will allow body kits into the STX class again. I really don't think they offer much advantage they weigh about the same and don't really provide much downforce if any. The wing offers some downforce but at the cost of weight, are wings still allowed in other ST classes?

not going to happen any time soon, the rules applies to the entire ST category - only body/aero parts that were either standard or factory options when ordering the car are allowed

If I had known where the SEB was going to go with ECU/Cat rules, I never would have been in favor of the aero takeback. In comparison, aero is de minimus in pushing ST* down the slippery slope to SP-on-street-tires.
