I have done a few nice arcs at about 65 mph at a local parkinglot, and it seems that if you let off throttle at all it just corrects and strainghtens out, so stay at 50% throttle the whole way. I'm running stock though, so if you have a decently tuned suspension with a little more adjustablity in the camber and dampening yuo should be able to stiffen up the front and rear to get more power over the friction coefficient of the stock meats. Looks like you should be running more horse than stock as well so quick e-brake to power over slides should work well on tight courses.

I drift locally with clubFR for fun. Does anyone on this board professionally or semi-professionally drift their rx-8? The only other ones I know of are 13b powered and are pros Rod Millen and the JIC one.

Right now anyone who drifts RX-8s professionally or semi-proffesionally runs the 13b swap, but I would love to see a change in that... The Renisis is definately a potent, well-engineered motor, and I'd love to see one under heavy boost sliding around... that would rock

Odds are about 95%+ that we are going to be building an RX-8 for next years Formula D series and it will also compete in the couple D1GP's in the US. We built the Falken Tire FD3S RX-7 that competed in '05 and part of '06. If/when we do get the car and the contract to build the 8, we will be doing a complete write-up on it and most likely documenting it here for everyone to see. Now I have driven an 8 twice now, but never tried to drift one. I know that with the FD, we ended up sizing down from the RB rear sway bar to the 99 spec rear bar to help with the rear end being too loose. I am reading that the opposite is the case with the 8 and the stiffer rear bar works better than the stock one? Plans for the car setup will follow depending on what the final budget is from the team and the sponsor.

In my experience, and from talking to others the Renesis isn't really the platform for that type of driving. I understand from talking with some people close to the Star Mazda series that there are problems with the rotors at the rotor bearing notch and the metal cracking. I haven't settled on a powerplant yet, but odds are it will be a 13B-RE Cosmo, more than likely with 2 turbos on it, probably GT28RS', but again, we'll see.

Rod's car is for sale BTW, and the JIC car is going to do Time Attack next year. So we are kinda excited to produce a competative car and from what I hear we are going to get a really good rotary driver too :D

We just bought ours, so we really haven't had a chance to take it out to a parking lot much. but as soon as we read how to disable to the DSC I was able to snap it sideways through a u-turn. This was on stock everything in a GT model. In my opinion this thing loves to drirft and is most certainly an excellent road course car as well.

I had the same experience. All I did was hit that switch and I had my 8 sideways at about 45 without doing much more than feinting the corner and applying throttle . I've slowed down cause I'm afraid to wreck this one... Its my daily driver as well as my playtoy so I havent tested the new sway bars or brakes as far as trying to push the car.

As for that buildup of the pro car, Its great that theres gonna be an 8 on the course for the Formula D circuit , but I still think that with some boost and the right combo of oil coolers, intercoolers and spray to the intercooler that the motor would hold up okay. Keeping the oil cool would be the hardest thing, and I'm willing to bet that when the Renisis that you are refering to cracked in the metal, it was improperly oiled or the oil was too thin for a rotory and it snapped under the metal-to-metal contact, which will happen to any motor, not just the Renisis 1.3L.

No the Renesis engine wouldn't be stable at 500-600hp with 10:1 compression and forced induction. I have kept my eyes on forced induction with the Renesis engines, and haven't seen many people over 400hp without troubles. I may not be seeing the people doing it and making it work, but I haven't seen them if they exist. The cracks on the renesis motors are in the rotor casting themselves, where the relief is to set the rotor bearing. They don't have a reason for it yet, but the guys that are running the open wheel cars have spec motors, all the same. It is to the point that there are multiple spare engines on the trailers to swap. I doubt it is caused by improper oiling, or too hot of oil. Those cars all run stock renesis engines. My guess is impurities in the metal cast into the rotors. But I have not witnessed it first hand, so I don't know.

Either way, I am really excited to work with the RX-8 since 90% of our customers are FD owners, 5% FC owners and 5% RX-8 owners. It looks like as more of them come off warranty, the more calls we are getting to work on them and modify them

i do apologise for the correction, but i must inform you that we just gor 335 on pump gas with a failing ignition system on the mazsport turbo. this system is controlled by int-x and the turbo is capable of 400whp. we may be able to get close to 400 whp in about 2 or 3 weeks after the new ignition system comes in. that being said. it was only a few months ago people were saying it was difficult to get 300 whp and now thats a joke... give it some more time and i can guarrentee you you will find this post and think to yourself. "the rx8 is just like the rx7.... it just took some time for the tech to come out, and now its a beast of a car." ive said it so many times and i am now right. we can reach 400 whp and maybe even more... we just need more internal modificaion and more tuning.( along with the 500 whp turbo set up) hey no one ever said it was going to be easy. this is trial and error.

That's awesome. I figured someone had to be doing it by now, I just haven't read anything regarding it. Do you guys have any write-ups or blogs or anything that I could follow? Seems like either not alot of people are making big power, or they are all hiding it :D

i'm not sure if i would want to drift my 8 drifting puts so much strain on parts that it would suck to brake something i rather just stick to autox and track.

Wow. Well im a new driver/Owner of the 8. I have drifted for a couple of weeks with a Honda accord. With only E-Brake in parking lots. Well i just got the Rx-8 and I'm still getting my shifting down correctly im only 16. I have about $2000 to get parts for the 8 to make it better for drifting. I would highly appreciated it if some one can point me to what i should get first. Rember the car is fully stock. Its a 2004 Rx-8 with 21 K on it.
Thanks.

How about stop "drifting" in parking lots. Try going to actual events. Doing stupid things in parking lots will only lead to fines and jail time. Events cost about 100-150 but you get real practice and get advice from real drivers.

The ebrake thing with your accord isn't really drifting. go to drifting.com and go to the forums if you want to learn.

this car is great for drifting. back end gets out easyin a number of ways (on my set up anyway). i enjoy mall parking lots at 3 Am. Yeah, watch for it, pig, you won't catch me. Oops, JK. I need to find a track that will let me really give it to her though.

i saw an awesome video of this dude in a black 8 drifting the hell out of a track. i think it was on here. he had a side mounted camera.

are you trying to drift on the stock alignment?

As the car starts to turn and you start to open up the throttle counter steer IMMEDIATELY. Then give it lots of gas while counter steering until you hit your exit angle. If the car isn't turning at all you are simply going too fast. you need to be able to turn the steering wheel say.....10 degrees (not scientific). It's got to be enough so the car actually starts to turn.

i took my 8 out drifting the other night for the first time, im used to my failry well modded turbo fc, so to me it really felt like it needed alot stiffer suspension, lots of body roll. power didnt feel too bad a few upgrades may help it out, turbo kit would make it a blast. the one thing i didnt really like was the power steering, due to the electric assist or its really hard to get feedback out of it. other than that though i had fun, i think it could be a good daily driver/drifter, but i dont think it could compete at a pro level with out some serious mods, but then again what pro car is stock.

also if remember correctly tony angelo from drift alliance is in a rx8 now but i dont the mods to it.

Mazda make the rx8 with a very close 50/50 weight distribution. The front is a little heavier, with stock size wheels and tires, the car is suppose to be very balance with minimal understeering. It doesn't have a lot of torque like the 350z or the new mustang, i heard the mustang is a fun car to drift.
OK, i have a stagger set up, 19" wheels, 275 rear and 245 front, my car is suppose to understeer more if you've read the post about balance in the wheel and tire section. But, NO, it doesn't, I've tested my car many many times, i know it's not because of my tires, they are fine, so I was thinking, why it always oversteer, yesterday night I was out with my friend's stock 350Z, dry road, nice temp around 58, we were doing some spirit driving and it happens again the a turn, the car oversteer, luckily i have too many experience on this and nothing happen. After the drive, me and my friend were chatting at starbucks and he asked, is my rear lighter than the front, I was thinking NO, but wait, YES, I then remember I took the rear re-bar out when I put the damn veilside rear on. and man that thing is heavy! maybe it's because of that the rear feels a bit lighter than stock, and it cost more oversteering? it's just my 2 cents, but if you want to drift easier, try take the rear rebar out.

re-bar is used to give structural integrity to concrete. Are you talking about the crash bar in the back? You know why that is there, right?

He bought/aquired Rod Millens Grenade Rx-8. I know it had a a 13B from an rx-7. I believe it was still running atwin turbo setup but I am not sure. Tony's now has a 787B paint job on it.

Just did some research. When Rod had it it had only a single turbo and JIC coilovers, tiebars and suspension rods
