Price limit? Functions? Point & Shoot? DSLR? The fact is if you want really nice shots of cars, you're going to have to end up getting a decent SLR ~ 4-500 bucks... Yeah check out Nikon's line, or Sony.
Go to BestBuy or CircuitCity and just play around with their cameras/videocameras. You can get a really nice HD vid. camera for a lot less nowadays

Canon has great Cameras & Lens also. I use a Rebel XT myself. Nothing too fancy. The new Canon XSi is supposed to be pretty nice.

I need a new camera as well. Similar to the OP, just want to be able to take some nice pics of my car from time to time.

I'll look into some Canon's. thanks guys!
I also don't want anything TOO small, I've got big hands and some of those tiny little cameras just don't work for me.

P.S. why is I don't even bat an eye at spending $1,000 on my car but I cringe at spending $500 on a camera??

as far as entry level video cameras i would say get a panisonic pv-gs300. its an awesome little camera and it has some manual funtions you can mess with. dont get the gs320. gs400 and 500 are good but they're going to cost you a little more. The reason why i recommend the 300 is because its cheap, 3ccd !, and its a perfect size to carry around or even mount in your car for a run. The gs320 doesnt have nearly the amount of things the 300 does. oh and you can switch from widescreen to full screen.

Check these out too, if you plan on doing mounted video, great price for what it is. Mount and waterproof case are part of it, $180 for the basic one...

Over the past 10 or so years my digi camera selection has evolved from point and click to slr.

I'm currently using an Olympus eVolt e500 and am very satisified with it. I've got a couple extra lens and have 0 complaints.

I'm not an expert by any means, just your run of the mill, lets go take some pictures kinda guy.
