There I was looking at the site, and admiring all the models they have built in the last 40 years. All with the amazing Rotary Engine. It's come a long way.

Heres to the past fourty years and the next fourty years,,,

Would have been a great time to launch a Mazdaspeed RX-8. Sadly, there still is not one. A 300HP RX-8 would have been awesome.

Mazda is just doing its flagship sports car totally wrong.

The 40th Anniversary web site is a bit crappy. Couldn't they publish more pictures of the Cosmo racing? I know some do exist for the Marathon de la Route. It kinda feels like the site is worked on during someone's spare time.

Its also ironic that the up and coming Tokyo Motor Show is also the 40TH..

The 40th Tokyo Motor Show 2007 will be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City for 17 days from October 26th (Friday) through November 11th (Sunday) this year. The show will be opened to the public from October 27th (Saturday).

So here is another good omen to see something change on the RX-8 or new Rotary?

I want a "Roadpacer"!!! (see the Graffiti section)

That thing looks like it rolled straight out of Detroit. All that chrome...and the specs...3 speed auto? Imagine what a head trip it would lay on car buffs at shows!

That's a fantistic bit of history, Old Rotor. Thanks for sharing it.

I remember it well (the Roadpacer) AKA Holden Premier, I had just started at Mazda and was a lad, heard about Mazda looking for this larger car to put a 13B in, they chose a GMH Product, had to do lots of re-tooling and "finishing" of the bodywork (very rough). For my memory the only alliance with a GM Product, then Ford Australia bought into Mazda 25%., part of the deal was to supply to Ford Australia KND kits of the first Mazda 323 FWD, known as the Ford Laser here.

But, you don't want a Roadpacer...good collectors car though..if you could find one.. it's a wonder Rotary Crazy has not imported one.

I'm an old Alfa guy, so I know of the general disappointments brought on by the difference between the fiction and reality of great or not-so-great cars of the past. This Roadpacer would, no doubt, be a slow, rolling whale by today's auto standards.

Cars have changed a lot over the last 20 or so years. I can recall chatting up a fellow Italian car enthusiast at a car show in the early 90's -- I managed to convince him to let me take his Ferrari 308 out for a romp. What a rush it was then!

But with my hindsight glasses on, I think the RX8 would be a match in both the handling and performance arenas. It does lack the Prancing Horse, though.

Getting ahold of a Roadpacer would be unlikely, I would expect. Mazda probably made few of them and, most likely, only a small percentage exist to this day. Sort of like the Longchamp from DeTomoso but without as much mystique.

Thank you for the insights into the history of the Roadpacer, I'm a glutton for this stuff. I hadn't realized the Holden GM division had such ties with Mazda. Ford's later involvement must have been odd -- like our "Capri" of the 90's: a strange blend of stuff assembled in AUS.

When I toured the Mazda Ujina plants, Hiroshima in the early 80's I remember seeing a few Roadpacers on the streets, and yes there were very heavy, heavy metal, bad road holding..bloody heaps!..
For memory I think Mazda made around 8-900 of them only for domestic use, Mazda tried to compete with the Toyota Crowns and Nissan Cedric's of that era, the "big "luxury" brands, the Roadpacer even had 8 track stereo players as standard!
