I love my car, but I'm already salivating at the thought of its successor with this engine. I need to start making serious money. Unless I jump tax brackets, plopping this baby in a 2-door vs. a "sedan" like the RX-8 will keep it uninsurable for all intents and purposes for me and a lot of folks out there.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with giving people a choice; just don't make the RX-8 heavier and/or uglier to make a 2-door or 2-seater look better.

Figuring on a 3,000-3,100lb car (GT RX8 is around there I think) the performance if it was released now would probably be on par with the existing 350z and probably trail the Evo and STI. The fact that it will be released in what 2-4 years depending on if they put it into the existing RX8 or the remodeled one in 2011 is just not going to be competitive. I’m sure it will be fun and as entertaining to drive as the 8 is now but it will still be considered underpowered.
Now if the put it into an MX5 or Kabura then you will have some serious performance, look what 180hp gets you in an Elise.

Whether it's underpowered compared with the competition is irrelevant to me. The other cars out there only care about straight-line acceleration. Their big-engine front-heavy offerings make engineering a car that doesn't handle like a total POS a real challenge. When the 6.0 L V8 Camaro hits the road that line of thinking will rule I'm afraind, but at least Mazdas will continue to leave the competition in the dust on any road with a curve.
The best balanced sports car is what I'm after, and if the RX-8 managed to win over all the magazines and beat out the competition in the shooutouts, I would think it's successor should do even more easily. Maybe the RXs don't burn up tires like the competition, but they sure can burn up the road when driven to their (far away) limits.
I do wonder if with the new engine you'll actually no longer be able to floor it from a stop and not spin your wheels. First car that I never had to be careful pulling out with, and I drove nothing but FWD before.

the engineers put a lot of time and money into designing the 8 and the renesis, with todays new technologies that werent available back in 2003, this new engine should be top of the line, able to perform up to the new evos/sti's in a straight line, and then surpass them even more on a track or a road with curves/turns

even with 3000lbs a real 280 hp rx-8 would be faster than a 350z, power to weight ratio should be better
if mazda makes a segond gen rx-8 it will be lightter

oh yea, we would smoke them in a straight line also. personnally, i dont know how much more the nissan designers/developers can pull out of the engine let alone the car. i think that they will just give the 350 a new design look every couple of years, but i really dont see how they can improve the performance of it. The 8 on the other hand, there is so much untouched territory with the rotary engine, they can unlock something potent, and blow everyone away, whether it is performance wise or efficiency.

Mazda’s best bet is to go light weight with a MX5 based vehicle and the 16x and then try to lighten the RX8 by 100lbs so there will be a serious performance vehicle and a GT. When they are competing with 500hp Camaros built by Holden (so they should be able to turn) BMW135i easily boostable to 400hp, 370z pushing 330-350hp, etc the 16x is not going to be able to compete.

Having said that, there's no substitute for cubic inches, er, liters of displacement, so I'm sure it will put out a bit more than the Renesis in FI trim.

I doubt compression ratio will go any higher than it is now. It could but I'd be surprised. It would be pointless for them to go down just for the sake of the aftermarket. I'd keep it high if I were them too.
Let's say the engine puts out 270 hp. If we could boost it to a nice 8 lbs we could theoretically get around 400 hp so I'm not too sure why that would be an issue. Imagine a rotary with 400 hp on fairly low boost!!!

that would be insane, we are already running 10:1 comp ratio, so like rg said, i dont really see a reason to go any higher, but with the FI popularity rising on the rotary, i think the designers will put more strength into the weak points of this engine. They know that no matter what, people will mod their engine, so along with putting out more hp while N/A, i think they will put more strength into the whole engine, like the saying goes, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link

Nice !!!

It seems this has been removed from the mazda website, what gives i really wanted to see some good pics of the 16x. Does anyone know it it was moved or something

i beleive that I read somewhere that upping the compression on the rx8 further showed no gains, so the mazda engineers stopped at the current comp ratio, if this is the case with the 16x as well, then the ratio should be the same. As far as DI goes its supposed to increase the threshold of where detonation occurs so all other things aside the 16x should be easyer to boost and more reliable to boost, as long as the new dimensions dont somehow screw things up
