The interesting breakout for RX-8 would be knowing how many of those "new" cars were '09s. With the hefty rebates for the '09s in place until March 1, I'll bet a good portion of those 77 were old inventory '09s

Where did you get this from? I don't see a link?

I just saw the report from PRNewswire, and Mazda only sold 77 RX-8's in February of 2010.

People get on me for being so negative about the future prospects for the RX-8, but look at these numbers. Rebates for '09s was $5k in Jan and Feb and $5.5k in March. Total sales for this period is 295 units, down almost 41% from last year. So far, I have not seen any rebates for '09s or '10s this month and gas prices seem to be on the increase. Care to venture a guess where sales might be headed??? The only potential bright spot might be that Mazda might want to keep a RX presence in the US until the 16x engine (and the model it goes into is ready). Maybe (and one can only hope) that might inspire them to add FI to the current model. One can only hope because, without continuing to offer substantial rebates, this car looks like it won't sell 1000 units in the US this year. The shame in all this is that I think Mazda has finally worked out the kinks in the current model and it would be awful to just let it die.

I wonder if this means I'll be able to get a good deal on one that might have been sitting on a lot for a while???

Yeah no kidding.. My local dealer has a leftover 2008 Anniversary edition, brand new, for $25K.

I've got my heart set on the Blue R3 they have parked out front though... they aren't willing to move on price yet, but I can wait.

I've 2009 R3s with low miles (like 5000) for around $25,000. When the $5k and $5.5K rebates were available, you could get a brand new R3 for that kind of money.

My local dealer has had a red R3 on its lot since the Fall. Even with $3k off MSRP, the car has not moved. With gas prices headed up this Summer, my guess is that RX-8s will not move without the continuance of substantial rebates.

The paradox is that I don't think Mazda would have to do much to fix the current model in terms of selling it. A low boost turbo giving the car around 275hp and an updated dash would do the trick.

Mazda is letting the car die---they could increase sale with an FI package but they wont do that due to emmissions and realiability concerns.
Mazda sold 136 in the month of May--do the math.

I've tried to find yearly sales totals for the rx8, and never was successful. Where can i find that info, or can someone post the totals 2004-09?

I cannot speak to the emissions issue, but a low boost turbo should not pose any reliability issues. Turbos are quite common in the marketplace on 4 cylinder engines. It is a relatively cheap way to keep the current car alive (if that is Mazda's desire). Otherwise, I don't see anyway this car continues into 2011 unless it is special order only. If I were a dealer, the only way I would take a 2011 RX-8 unchanged from 2009 is if I had no choice.

Thats why I really want the R3. I know its going to be the end of the line, and IMO is likely the end of the line for the rotary engine in the US.

But hell if I'm gonna pay sticker price!

From the previous page in this thread:

160,000 thru 2006:

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-media-news-11/mazda-rotary-production-number-history-169856/

Should be ~200,000 by now worldwide.

I still maintain MPG is the main sales killer for this car. Actually not MPG alone, but mpg in relation to the car's HP. If this thing could get close to 30 hwy I'll bet total US sales since the car came out would be nearly doubled.

But even though nobody is buying them, it almost shocks me the number of times people still come up to me when I'm out and about asking about the car. At the gas station, grocery store parking lot, etc...Maybe people don't actually realize how attainable this car is these days price-wise.

OH NOES!

I guess the slack will be taken up by the "next generation rotary" that everyone so obviously wants and can't wait for!

I should have said that my statement was tongue-in-cheek.

I just happened to randomly search for how many RX-8's they sold in Feb 2011 and decided toupdate this tread.

Monthly and Yearly US Sales totals since 2004

The attached PDF file is a chart I've been keeping for a while. It gives a good overall view of how US RX8 sales went up....then down; now it's just kind of flatlined. Kind of a bummer... I'll post updates once in a while.

I had my oil changed at the dealership today. While waiting, I went and looked at cars. Long story short, They tried to sell me a new 2010 for $18,000 first offer.

What trim was that? It's really sad that this is what is has come to for this car. They can barely give them away.

That was the base sports model. No traction control, no sunroof, no power seats. The very base model.

I bought my 2009 new in 2010. Loaded GT with 100 miles on it for 25K.
Now i work at a mazda dealership and we have 4 Rx-8s that have sat on the lot for 3 months. I've sold one, sure, because i can convince people past the usual negative things they've heard, Torque, handling on wet roads, expense, etc. But most of the other salesmen don't try to overcome those objections. (plus there's more money to be made in Cx-s and even 3s)

This is the last year for the Rx-8, from what i've heard anyway. So mazda aren't trying to advertise or even give incentives to sell them. I don't even have special financing on them like I do on the ill-selling Mazda2. It's a shame alright.
