agreed. fuel economy and lack of power are big killers for average-car-buyer joe. my point is that taking things that people like about the car and changing them, (potentially without solving the two main issues), will not likely bring fame and fortune the the rx name

The rate of growth of this thread is evidence in itself of how much people have been waiting for any change at all from Mazda on the 8. A lot of people criticising the RS model or the stock upgrade that they haven't even as yet seen, aren't even half serious about purchasing a new 8.
Again I say: WELL DONE MAZDA!!
Paul.

Everytime an RX-7 in the past had a facelift, and they all did, sales didn't just suddenly go through the roof. That won't happen now either. It's an update and nothing more. They aren't trying to gain a huge market share that they didn't have before with this. The updated versions of the RX-7's are harder to find than the preupdated models because there aren't as many of them. The post updated models are better cars though. The same comments were made on all of them too. People hated this and that. It's the same thing repeated. I am more shocked that people act the way they do about these things. Then they do it all over again on the next car. As with anything it takes some getting used to.
IMO this is how the RX-8 should have always looked. Something always looked wrong with it. It has always looked heavy. This looks light and nimble. The styling is nicer and has a much smoother feel to it. Yes the steering wheel is fugly but the car as a whole looks like something I'd consider buying if I didn't already have a car that got twice the mileage and was already paid off.
Right now people are criticizing it but it won't be long before we see people trying to scramble to find the parts to update theirs to look like it. It won't be cheap but it'll happen. It always happens.

The MS version looks better than the standard, but it is not much of a change over the original MS look. Even if that car had the 16x, it would still get a YAWN.
Mazda needs a true 2 door coupe....

I love how everyone says this... The RX8 is fine the way it is IMO. It is a road car, that is balanced between horsepower and handling. When I first got mine, I expected it to be a dog by the way everyone talked, but after I drove it I thought it was perfect. Decided I was not even doing an exhaust or intake as it was not needed.
You want a high horsepower car, go buy a Vette. Leave the RX8 alone. I would rather have the above car with the NA 1.3L (or better, the 1.6L) then for them to put a turbo on the thing.
I love the new styling. It is giving me something to save up for again.

about the black bar in the grill. i know its a styling choice- they get to have a bigger faux grill opening without exposing the crash bar and white foam. however why dont they recess that bar under some more mesh or just have the non cutout mesh like in our upper grill area?
thats really the only thing that bothers me about the design. i like it very much over all. except the steering wheel which i reserve judgment until i see it in person.
im annoyed they changed the cut line so the bumpers wont retrofit easily. and i like that little light on the vender vent now. like a little jewel.

Great job with all the pics guys, and I'm glad to see such interest in the 8. I'll go ahead and echo what some others have said throughout the thread...I like my 8, and I really like the facelift(s), especially, the MS 8, but they're going to have to bring some better power to get me to buy another.
Perhaps Mazda isn't as concerned with keeping existing customers, but rather gaining new ones with the update. Just a thought? We'll see about the update in the power department soon, I would guess. But if they don't up the ponies: they're shooting themselves in the foot by ignoring the biggest complaint about the car in every magazine review, and all over this board--underpowered.

I know it's a little thing, but I like that the current front bumper cut line is horizontal and not at such an angle like the new one.
I also believe Mazda bean counters decided to utilize the MX-5 steering wheel to cut costs. As others mentioned there are other various updates from the Mazda parts bin. That's too bad. It's not as unique anymore.
