After further in depth research of the "trunk". I believe it is not what was previously thought to be. I will post the pic tonight when I get home and my results of research.

Thanks for the pics. Think you could crawl under there and take a few of the rear suspension? Would like to see what's changed.

^^ good request.

supposedly there were geometry improvements, right?

I wonder if they are too subtle to see in pics (heck it could even be a new 'stock' alignment...)

--

can you get a picture of the new oil injector positioning?

Is there an actual pass-through from the engine compartment to the new side vent?

I do have some and I really don't know what if anything you can tell from them.
You'll have to wait till later for me to access them. On the computer at work now.

That is a little difficult I have a bad picture where the OMP use to be. Nothing there. As far as the injectors, they are under the UIM. Let me see if I can at least see them. I believe they are just centered in the rotor housing. I think. I'll let you know.

Good question. I don't know for sure. I'll see if I can see anything. I do know they grill in the bumper has a lot more openings in it. At least 40% more flow it looks like.

I was wondering that myself, it would look pretty cool (and be functional) without that reflector/light pasted on there.

they moved the omp too? is it still mechanically driven?

curious...

I'm wondering about the injector position because we've seen the 16x layout, but i haven't seen any photographic proof of the new layout on a 13B. Just taking ppl's word for it (since it is completely believable).

But if you say they moved the mop, that i'm really interested in~

Don't know what you can tell from these but here are some of the rear end.
Yes it is dirty underneath.
Left, center, right.

This is the trunk mystery,,,

It appears to be a bottle of Mobil Clean 5000 Not sure what the weight is. At first the speculation was it was a bottle of Mobil 1 Synthetic. Well it is NOT.
So put that right out of your minds.

I was so sure it had a big silver '1' on the label... guess that shows one sometimes sees only what one wants to see!

the diff case seems to have changed, or what is the silver part that seems to be sticking out of it?

is the size of the pumpkin the same?

It's a test car. It was in some severe weather. Below zero is my understanding. So you get crap/salts from the roads. The car has over 3000 miles on it.

I really haven't heard anything about design differences in the rear end. As far as I know the only thing that has been changed is the gear ratio to 4.77

I think it has to do with cooling the rear diff. Since it is attached to the diff, the design of it seems to capture the undercar airflow to act as a heatsink for the diff.

my thoughts exactly, but i figured i'd wait and see what you all had to say.

could we get a clearer picture of the whole thing? (from an angle so the exhaust isn't blocking it)

if it's only a tiny grill I don't see how much cooling it could provide over the standard fins - which it still seems to have. Especially if it is only present on the very edge of the case.

Seems like all of the small changes that are being uncovered in these pics are to do with increasing longevity and reliability. This is really noteworthy and moreso than anything I've seen to date. Perhaps that's Mazda's main goal this time around. So far there's the 3rd oil injector, OMP, revised oil pan, larger oil cooler radiators, and this dif cooling apparatus. I wonder how many other incremental improvements will be uncovered on closer inspection. Perhaps in the coolant system? Ignition system? CAT construction?

Hopefully these are a prelude to upping the power safely one day in the future. No sense in making a (more) powerful, but unreliable rotary (again...thinking RX-7).

If only they would have not changed the body I would have opt to get the inprovements.
Only a matter of time till someone finds a way for us to use these improvements
