Injection methodology is discrete from NA/FI (fuel, not air source). But it's just a matter of where the injection occurs.
Our present engines essentially have computer controlled direct injection, vs. carburetion, but the 16X is to have true direct injection as the term was intended.

I totally agree with you. The Rotary is the only IC engine that can run hydrogen with a few modifications that will not blow up. It can also run off of diesel or 100% ethanol (Furai). I really don't look for mpg's in my RX-8 though, that is what my Mazda 3s is for.
most interest in di is usually combined lately with a turbo or a higher compression ratio in order to get more power out of a smaller engine.

Isn't the combustion chamber in a rotary too big for diesel to work? I don't think you could get enough compression to ignite diesel in that big of a chamber...especially considering the compression in a rotary is already very high running regular gasoline.

No, there have been Diesel rotaries and, more commonly, spark-ignition rotaries running on Diesel fuel. Keep in mind, these are sometimes big stationary engines or for heavy tanks. Don't recall a Diesel rotary ever being used in a more conventional car, but I do think there have been small turbo-Diesel aircraft Wankels.

I think that when you buy an RX-8 you are buying into an exotic car. We are a breed of people who believe that an exotic does not have to be ultra expensive to be an exotic. I'm from Puerto Rico (caribbean Island) where Mazada's and rotaries are very popular and even here the RX-8 is a rare sight on the highway. But to me that make's it all the more appealing. When you take into account the craftsmanship of the engine, being hand build and all, the world renown handling and the price I can't help but to feel smart and privilege that I had the ability to see above the marketing and the conventional wisdom and went for the 8. My favorite quote was when I once read a pundit say and I'm paraphrasing: "We other cars you are trying to avoid bad behavior , but with the RX-8 your are trying to make it behave badly". But it's difficult.
The car is so superbly balance and well behave that you have to drive it to believe it.

No, only the primary injectors are.
I'm not sure why they did that, but I know that putting injectors up further in the intake at high revs can help cool the intake charge and help atomize the fuel better leading to better power.

I wouldn't say that RX-8's are a rare sight here in the US, but you certainly don't see a lot of them. When you do see one, it's a great feeling. You know the person behind the wheel is a motor-Connoisseur not a poser.
And that adds to the appeal of an RX car, which in my book is an exotic.

I wave or or signal at an RX7 owner whenever I see them, but only if the car doesn't look to be like it cost $900, and that is getting ripped off.
Call me snobby, but I've been there, and that cheap car is just a car to trash around and race around. Not something you truly care about. If you did, you'd put it in a garage and fix it up.
Although, if they are true rotor heads and they signal at me, I'll gladly return. Not many trustable rotor heads around here these days.......

Yeah, my rx7 looks like a piece of junk, but whenever I see an rx8 or an rx7, I give the thumbs-up whether I'm in my rx7 or my rx8 no matter what condition the car is in.
